Mirzapur: Season 1 Episode 6 Recap - Barfi

Guddu and Bablu indulge further in a life of crime.

Mirzapur: Season 1 Episode 6 Recap - Barfi

The cops and the gangsters are all in. They know the plan of action for the future. But there’s a new fish in the pond.

Inspector RS Maurya (Amit Sial) has been transferred to the Mirzapur police department. Is he one of the good guys, or bad ones? We don’t know yet.

Back at the Tripathi mansion, Holi celebrations are well underway. All the bahubalis (gangsters) and politicians are invited. JP Yadav tells Jaunpur’s Rati Shankar Shukla to end the rivalry with the Tripathi family. That would reduce the violence in town, people will re-elect JP Yadav, and the two gangsters can continue to carry forward their illegal operations without any trouble.

It’s a hauntingly accurate description of modern politics. The politicians and the wealthy always have the perfect plan for themselves in place. The only ones who will suffer are the common people, and that’s really not much of a concern, is it?

Shukla and Tripathi agree to the plan. They will co-exist peacefully and continue to sponsor Yadav’s campaign. Shukla even asks Jaunpur’s biggest liquor distributor Chadha to donate an additional amount for JPs campaign. Chadda agrees when he finds out that will open future possibilities for expansion in Mirzapur.

On the other side of town, Golu and Bablu once again find themselves at the local restaurant. Golu is considering contesting for the post of college President, as advised by the University authorities. Nobody wants Munna to win, but they cannot say that to his face. So bringing in a strong competitor was their only option.

Bablu encourages Golu to file the nomination and tells her that working for the Tripathi’s doesn’t mean he has lost all sense of right and wrong.

Sweety and Guddu are also there now. Sweety is going to introduce Guddu to her father - the cop who works for the Tripathi family. Parshuram Gupta arrives at the restaurant, takes one look at Guddu and says “I approve.” Look at that, working for powerful people comes with additional benefits! Your girlfriend’s corrupt dad will totally love you.

Everyone is happy now. Kaleen bhaiya asks Guddu and Bablu to expand the “Barfi business” too. Barfi means opium here. Weird euphemism, but full points for creativity.

Guddu and Bablu have more power than ever now. The only instruction is that they cannot make big changes without Kaleen Bhaiya’s approval.

With more money and power than ever, Guddu and Bablu purchase a house under their parents’ name. While their mother is proud of them, Panditji, the honest lawyer, once again objects to this and refuses to even look at the house or the contract papers.

The next day, Bablu tells Guddu about his next big plan - a change in the distribution chain. He wants to employ the transgendered people of Mirzapur as drug peddlers because the police never frisks them. Soon the plan comes to fruition. The drug business starts to flourish, and once again, the people of Mirzapur continue to live in an unjust world.

I can’t believe this. The plot keeps getting darker and more unsettling with each episode but at the same time, it’s extremely intriguing and keeps me on the edge of my seat.

This episode of Mirzapur is another 4/5.

Mirzapur Season 1 is now streaming on Prime Video.
