Web Series Inspired by Real-Life Incidents

The recently released web series, Grahan, on Disney Plus Hotstar is set against the backdrop of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the country. The web series became a hit among the masses and critics alike. This format of using real-life incidents from history and creating a fictional narrative around it is not new. It certainly appeals to the audiences and it is a way for filmmakers and storytellers to bring back some forgotten but important events of history. State of Siege: 26/11

As the name suggests, State of Siege: 26/11 is about the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. This series highlights the lesser-known facts of the deadly attacks and also the challenges that NSG commandos had to face in combating the terrorists. State of Siege: 26/11 was released in March 2020 on Zee5 and stars Arjun Bajwa, Arjun Bijlani, Jyoti Gauba and Vivek Dahiya. 

Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story

Released in October 2020, Scam 1992 is a financial thriller web series streaming on SonyLIV. This hit web series is based on the Indian stock market scam committed in 1992 by many stockbrokers, Harshad Mehta being one of them. Scam 1992 got a lot of praise for its story and performances by the cast which included Pratik Gandhi, Shrey Dhanwanthary, Hemant Kher and Nikhil Dwivedi. 

Delhi Crime

Netflix’s Delhi Crime is based on the horrendous 2012 Delhi gang rape. The series follows the police as it investigates the perpetrators who raped the victim and left her dead. Delhi Crime garnered worldwide praise and received an International Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. Delhi Crime became the first-ever Indian series to win this award. It stars Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal, Adil Hussain and Rajesh Tailang. 

Avrodh: The Siege Within

A SonyLIV original, Avrodh: The Siege Within is a military drama that is a fictionalised retelling of the 2016 Uri attack and the surgical strikes that followed. The show received praise from critics for its non-jingoistic portrayal of these attacks. Avrodh: the siege within stars Amit Sadh, Vikram Gokhale, Neeraj Kabi, Darshan Kumar, Ananth Narayan Mahadevan and Madhurima Tuli. 

Jamtara - Sabka Number Ayega

Jamtara- Sabka Number Ayega is crime-drama web series on Netflix which revolves around the social engineering operations of a group of youngsters in Jamtara, Jharkhand. Its story was spotted by director Soumendra Padhi when he read an article about phishing operations by school children in Jamtara district. Jamtara stars Amit Sial, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Sparsh Shrivastav and Grahan actor Anshuman Pushkar. 

Special Ops

In this crime-thriller web series, a RAW officer studies similar patterns in several terrorist attacks and believes that one person is behind all of them. His team undertakes an espionage mission in different parts of the world to catch the mastermind. The story of Special Ops is inspired by several such missions undertaken by India in the last two decades. The web series stars Kay Kay Menon, Vinay Pathak, Karan Tacker, Vipul Gupta and Saiyami Kher and is available on Disney Plus Hotstar. 

The Forgotten Army- Azaadi Ke Liye

Amazon Prime Video’s The Forgotten Army is based on real-life events about the Indian National Army (INA) led by Subhash Chandra Bose. The INA’s struggle and the story got lost somewhere in the history of India’s independence and thus, the web series is named The Forgotten Army. Directed by Kabir Khan, it stars Sunny Kaushal and Sharvari Wagh in lead roles.
