Mirzapur: Season 1 Episode 5 Recap - Bhaukal

With each episode, we dive deeper into the crime riddled world of Mirzapur. Guddu and Bablu have successfully gotten rid of the police officer who was after them, without using violence. But it looks like Guddu has developed quite a knack for it. He is almost sad that he didn’t get to use his gun. The first murder didn't make him cautious or reflective, instead it made him reckless.

The next stop for the boys is Rajan Mishra’s house. Rajan is a kabutar (distributer of homespun guns). He has reported the highest number of defective guns. Turns out, his brother-in-law lives in Jaunpur, and the two had been conspiring together against Akhandanand. Bablu tries to scare Rajan by telling him that the repercussions could be dire, but even before Rajan has the time to defend himself, Guddu shoots him in front of his wife and son.

Bablu is sitting there shocked. He cannot believe what his brother has become. With shaky hands and eyes filled with tears, Bablu takes Guddu home and does not utter a word.

Wonderful acting by Vikrant Massey in this scene. He is the voice of reason who shares the audience’s vision and perspective.

After receiving compliments from Akhanda, the brothers know what their course of action in the future will be. They want to test everyone’s loyalty and enhance cohesion in the gun distribution system. Head of quality assurance department, Upadhyay, is the next. Guddu and Bablu make sure they personally test every single gun to make sure it doesn’t explode. Upadhyay is visibly shaking, as if he knows he has done something wrong, but he does his best to keep up the charade.

Guddu and Bablu part ways for the day. Guddu brings jhumkas (earrings) as a gift for Sweety, who happily accepts it. And Bablu tells Kaleen bhaiya about his plan for the future. He wants to form a union of Kabutars and police officers. Everyone will get a share of the profits based on how much guns they personally manage to sell or promote. The plan is to transform Mirzapur into the United States as far as gun control is concerned.

A huge luncheon is organised. All the involved parties are invited so that the new plan is executed smoothly. Once again, Munna is pouting over things not going his way. There are hundreds of people present, ministers, distributors, nobodies, all under the same roof. There are dance performances and sweets being handed out to everyone.

Divyendu’s portrayal is so wonderful that despite the narrow description of his character, the angry and impulsive act never gets repetitive.

He is angry that his father didn’t consult him before making changes to the business, and because Sweety chose Guddu over him. He spends the night drinking in a remote corner of the town with his best friend Compounder (Abhishek Banarjee), who knows a lot about murdering someone with an ustara (straight knife).

Munna goes on to kill someone using an ustara instead of a gun very soon after that, while still under the influence of alcohol.

Nonchalant attitude is one thing, multiple cold blooded murders are another. Maybe Munna’s character has a third trait after all.

The episode ends with an unusual scene. Guddu and Bablu are back at home, when their mother Vasudha (Sheeba Chaddha) tells them that she doesn’t like the way the local grocer talks to her. She wants her sons to come along and show off their guns so the poor man feels intimidated by them. Once again, Bablu thinks their presence alone should do the trick and guns are unnecessary in this situation. But Guddu is ready to put on a show.

The grocer is evidently scared by this foolproof intimidation tactic and promises free lifetime supply of groceries for Pandit family.

To be honest, despite its scary and unexpected nature, I found this scene to be rather funny. You could call it guilty pleasure I suppose.

In the end, we see that Bablu’s plan comes to fruition over the months and everyone in town starts carrying guns with them. It’s officially anarchy. A montage shows how quickly the citizens of Mirzapur have taken to the dark side. We’ll see what the second half will bring.

4/5.
