What The Folks: Season 1 Episode 2 Recap - The Mad House
What The Folks welcomes homeliness in Nikhil's life with this episode.
The morning at the Sharmas' apartment looks like a crime scene. Prakash stares at the hanging bumper of his car while Sudha and Akshata each stand on one side. The three exchange glances and Prakash says, "Arey yaar retirement ke paiso se li thi". Meanwhile, Nikhil is preparing for his sorry speech.
Nikhil has finally addressed the Sharmas as "Maa" and "Papa". He is expecting confrontation but his new set of parents go into denial mode. They do their best to treat their dear damaad like a prince by dodging the "car conversation".
Anita tells Nikhil that he should accompany Sudha to the boring family function in the evening, as a light punishment for banging the car. An awkward meet up with middle aged relatives is an apt atonement for Nikhil's deeds.
At work, Rohan advises him to get involved in minor activities at the Sharmas' place to make up for the car accident. Classic buttering up tactics.
Nikhil takes his advice and comes up with a great plan: to replace the old mixer and microwave with new ones. But that mixer was a wedding anniversary gift! And gifts with a background story have a special place in a middle class house.
While Prakash and Sudha argue over who is responsible for the new appliances, Nikhil tries to interrupt and tell them that he's the one to be blamed. He keeps on saying, "Sorry Papa", but again, he's the "precious" damaad of the house.
There is chaos in the Sharmas' home as everyone takes turns pointing fingers at each other (except Nikhil). The young electrician blames the older one, Prakash blames the young electrician, and Sudha blames Prakash. A love triangle... without the "love", of course.
The little things between family members like, a mini war, moments of affection, have been portrayed gracefully in the show.
Later in the evening, Prakash in a bid to mend his wife's upset mood, decides to accompany her to the boring family function. He starts singing romantic songs for Sudha while Nikhil smiles and watches them. Before leaving for the party, Prakash says that he felt touched when Nikhil called him "Papa". There is some new born warmth in the father and son-in-law's relationship and I'm looking forward to it growing.
