Top Ten Action Thriller Movies

What is not to love about the action-thriller movie genre? They have adrenaline filled action sequences with interesting and suspenseful storylines. Usual leads are alpha men or one-man-army type heroes with responsibility for saving the world thrust upon their shoulders.

Most films are pretty unrealistic but plot accuracy is not the reason you watch them. They are mostly entertainment based. But with changing times, this genre has produced some amazing films proving that they are not just lucrative commercial movies.

We are listing our ten favorite action-thriller movies made in Bollywood.

10. Aakrosh

This 2010 film is an action-thriller based on honour killings in India. It has more than enough plot twists to keep you engaged with the story and intrigued with the unexpected conclusion.

9. Mardaani 2

This movie revolves around the carefully crafted cat and mouse game between a criminal and Rani Mukerji’s character Shivani Shivaji Roy. The antagonist is smartly written and the narrative and direction of this story is immaculate.

8. Tiger Zinda Hai

I consider this to be one of the few good movies of Salman Khan. There is an engaging plot twist and the leads slip into their role of rogue agents naturally. The action sequences are extremely well-made and the plot twista are impressive.

7. The Burning Train

This Dharmendra and Hema Malini blockbuster is a cult classic. There is a lot of variety and background to the supporting characters. The story is infused with drama and conflict, signature of an 80s film.

6. Jai Gangaajal

Prakash Jha’s sequel to Gangaajal (2003) is a masterpiece with Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the lead. The story revolves around IPS Abha Mathur’s struggle to end the environment of dread and anarchy in a rural town taken over by local mafia-like politicians.

5. Ab Tak Chhappan

It is the story of an encounter specialist and the trouble that ensues with change in his superior officer. We see larger than life criminals, with friends at high places, gang up on the lead played by Nana Patekar.

4. A Wednesday!

This is the story of how an ordinary man brings the Mumbai crime department to its knees. We see top cop Prakash Rathod struggling to understand his prime suspect’s motives or determine his identity. The movie received critical acclaim.

3. Special 26

CBI is hot on the heels of an extremely witty gang of thieves who use fake raids to rob people. CBI lays an elaborate trap to catch them, will they succeed ? The movie is based on the Opera House heist of 1987. It has one of the most baffling conclusions.

2. Khakee

Hands down the movie with the most unexpected plot twist. It has a star studded cast with Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead.  Ajay Devgn does justice to his role as an antagonist. This movie is different from others since we see a different background and the past of the suspect in police custody.

1. Baby

Perfect acting, direction and scripting, this movie truly transformed the genre and gave the audience a glimpse of what happens when action-thriller movies are well-thought and planned and not just fight sequence based. You will be glued to your seats until the very end.
