Sports genre has always been a hit with audiences. Be it Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky (1976) or Amir Khan’s Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992). The scenes with pumping adrenaline and last minute goals have been a sure shot entertainment source for the public. Superstars of the industry have from time to time starred in sports movies as they are a promising commercial hit. Even Farhan Akthar's upcoming film, Toofan, is going to be his second sports genre movie. Audiences are also waiting for Ranveer Singh’s 83 in which he plays the role of the great Kapil Dev.

10. Chhalaang (2020)

Amidst the raging pandemic, Rajkumar Rao’s family entertainer was a fun watch. The story is about the transformation of Rao's character from a lazy PT teacher to an inspiring coach, who makes a group of misfits win an intra-school sports championship.

9. Sand Ki Aankh (2019)

The movie was based on the real-life oldest women sharpshooters in the world - Chandro and Prakashi Tomar. It narrates the story of these two women as they defy ageism and patriarchy and win many national shooting championships.

8. Bend it like Bekham (2002)

Bend it like Bekham is an Indian-English romantic comedy sports film produced, written and directed by Gurinder Chadha. It stars Parminder Nagra and Anupam Kher. The story revolves around an 18 year old girl from a traditional Sikh family in London wanting to play football and the struggles she faces along the way.

7. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016)

It is an Indian Hindi-language biographical sports drama film on the ex-captain of the Indian cricket team. It stars late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The film perfectly encapsulates Dhoni’s rise from a middle class Ranchi boy to a world famous cricketer.

6. Mary Kom (2014)

The movie depicts Kom's journey of becoming a boxer to her victory at the 2008 World Boxing Championships in Ningbo. Priyanka Chopra did justice to her character and upon the release, the film recorded the highest opening weekend of all time for a female-led Indian film.

5. Paan Singh Tomar (2012)

Irfan Khan proved why he was among the best Indian actors with his titular role in Paan Singh Tomar. It is a biopic of a seven-time national steeplechase champion who later turned into a bandit when his own country didn’t acknowledge his efforts.

4. Bhag Milkha Bhag (2013)

The movie is based on the difficult life of Milkha Singh, an Indian athlete who was a Commonwealth Champion and an Olympian. The film received many accolades and brought the talented Farhan Akhtar back in his well deserved limelight.

3. Dangal (2016)

Dangal is a biopic of real life wrestler, Mahavir Singh Phogat who raises his daughters and evolves them into World Class Fighters against the stereotype that girls cannot do well in male dominated sports like wrestling.

The Academy nominated cricket based movie has a lasting impression even after two decades of it’s release. It is Amir Khan’s masterpiece with the perfect blend of struggle and patriotism.
