The Final Call Season 1 Episode 8 Recap

We finally learn about the fate of Skyline 502 and it’s passengers.

The Final Call Season 1 Episode 8 Recap

This episode starts with the flashback to the moment when Kiran hears that Abhimanyu is dead. We see she is very calm and composed as she walks into her office and draws the curtains on the glass walls and cries. Cut to the last conversation she had with her son. We learn that Abhimanyu is her son from her first marriage. She had a strained relationship with him because of her hectic job and finds it difficult to give him attention.

At ATC, the technicians calculate that if the plane doesn’t land in Jakarta, it will crash due to low fuel.

Kiran convinces Kale that she is the only person who can negotiate with Captain Karan even though she has personal interest in the Skyline 502 situation.

Kale extends his apologies for her son.

In another flashback we learn that Kiran is resigning from her job soon so that she can spend more time with Abhimanyu.

The flashback ends and we see Kiran holding a scissor’s blade next to her wrist. She suddenly stops and realisation hits her. She now knows that Captain Karan wants to commit suicide.

When Captain Karan calls ATC. Kiran tells him that she knows he wants to commit suicide. Kiran tells him that she also knows that he wanted to drink the poison but something went wrong.

Captain Karan says he wants to die in the air, like a real fighter pilot.

Kiran adds that she will abide by his conditions and that no one will come close to the plane before 30 minutes of it’s landing.

Karan informs her that she is lying because he knows she doesn’t have the power to authorize his conditions. He says the moment he lands he will be arrested and tortured.

Kiran accepts her mistake. She tells him that she has a son who is a pilot. She understands what Karan is going through and knows about how his family’s accident broke him emotionally. She adds that killing innocents won’t bring his family back and he will only make many other families go through the same hurt he did.
Captain Karan disconnects the call.

Back in the passenger’s section, Tyagi is angry with Krishnamurthy for not warning him about the possible plane crash and letting him board the plane. Siddharth is asking Krishnamurthy nervous questions about death and after-life. Krishnamurthy says that he will give him one final lesson. He holds his hands and it is hinted that he channels all the knowledge he has accumulated and transfers it to Siddharth. When Siddharth asks about the images he is seeing, Krishnamurthy tells him that it was the universe and not an illusion.

This scene might be a foreshadow to the names of these characters, Siddharth as in Gautam Buddha and Krishnamurthy for god Krishna, and their journey in life.

Soon we see Krishnamuthy die peacefully due to a heart failure.

Karan remembers Kiran talking about parents who might lose their children and mentions the word ‘champion’ to refer to kids. He sees a tattoo on Abhimanyu’s wrist with the same words and connects the dots.

He immediately calls ATC and asks if  Kiran would ever be able to forgive him. Kiran becomes quiet. Karan tries to stop his tears and apologizes to Kiran.

Kiran forgives him. Karan now cries and says he forgives the 17 year old drunk driver who killed his family. But then he continues and says he can’t forgive himself. He finishes by saying it was an honor to fly with Abhimanyu and to talk to her.

The plane is seen descending. Captain Karan takes out the poison pill and swallows it.

We see the plane come close to a landing strip near the sea. The plane starts shaking violently and Captain Karan gets landing gear failure notification. He is also losing consciousness.

ATC is seen waiting for a crash with bated breaths.

Captain Karan starts to foam from his mouth and crash lands into the sea. We see Skyline 502 slowly submerge fully into the water.

In the next scenes we see the people who survive the crash and those who did not.

We see Siddharth alive on the shore along with Sarah.

Kiran gets a call from her journalist friends. She asks Kiran to choose between two headlines. First- ‘Unstable pilot crashes plane, 126 killed’ Second- 'Ex-Air Force captain saves 174 lives in landing’

Scene cuts to a funeral memoriam of all who died in the crash. We learn Parineeta, Giselle, Tyagi, Dhruv and Karan are dead.

Siddharth goes to Kshimanuthy’s house and gets emotional when he sees Krishnamuthy’s library and the books he has written.

3 years later

We see Sarah renovating Dhruv’s granny’s old age home.

Siddharth has become a saint and dresses up like Krishnamuthy and gives sermons to his students. He sees Krishnamuthy’s soul smiling at him.

Kiran has adopted a child named Abhimanyu.

I have mixed feelings about the end. Captain Karan was depressed and wanted to die in the air like a fighter pilot. But this wish led to the deaths of innocents. His last action before his death, I personally felt, was selfish.

Kiran negotiating with Captain Karan when she was emotionally compromised was also not a good decision in professional terms. In the end Kale fails to help or prevent the crisis and proves to be an unlikable character.

I didn’t empathise with Tyagi, Dhruv or Parineeta. Their backstories didn’t contribute to the alleged hijack attempt around which the story is centered around.

I really hoped there would be no supernatural element in this story, but the end of the story failed my expectation and Siddharth becoming a saint felt like another philosophical theme, away from reality.

Episode Rating-2.5/5
