The Final Call Season 1 Episode 4 Recap

This episode begins with a flashback of Siddharth’s childhood. We see he comes from a rural family. He is playing in the fields and then sits beside a well. He falls into the well but miraculously survives. We see a young Siddharth holding a bluish stone in his hand when he wakes up after surviving the fall.

In another flashback we see a now grownup Siddharth explaining to his colleague that everything he has achieved in his life was through luck. He thinks that his success is due to the bluish stone he still carries with him.

The flashback ends and we see Krishnamurthy teaching Siddharth the astrology chart for figuring out the death dates of people. Siddharth is shocked when he reads his own chart and learns that there are only 4 hours left in his life. Still unconvinced he asks Dhruv, the boy sitting next to Sarah, his birth date and time. Siddharth calculates that Dhruv has only 4 hours to live too. He asks Krishnamurthy if the plane is going to crash soon. Krishnamurthy replies in the affirmative.

Siddharth immediately goes back to the business class to look for his bluish stone. He doesn’t find it.

A flashback of Captain Karan’s life starts.

We see that he is in therapy. Karan talks about suffering from extreme PTSD and how he gets flashes of the battlefield all the time.

Karan has nightmares. His wife tries to stop him from overdosing on his medication. Karan tells her he is getting worse. They talk about getting medical help.

Cut to another scene of therapy, Karan says during his episodes of war flashes he forgets if he is in the past or the present. He contemplates leaving his job as a commercial pilot.

Back in the present day, we see Kiran and ATS Kale arguing. Kale wants to get his commando inside the plane and get Karan killed. He believes that Joe will then go to the cockpit and control the plane. Kiran tells him that she is not even sure if Joe is alive.

Kiran blames him for Captain Karan’s decision not to land. Kale tells her that she has no experience in situations like these. Kiran informs him that she handles the whole Mumbai Air Traffic department and understands risks better than he does. She expresses her doubts on his competence and this hurts Kale’s ego.

Kiran later calls her journalist friend to get background information on Kale. We learn through their conversation that Kiran has divorced her first husband and has re-married.

In Kiran's flashback we see her husband angry at her for lying and going to an active terrorist situation while she is pregnant.

We are back getting more glimpses of Karan’s life before the flight.

He and his family are at a wedding. Karan looks comparatively better and we even see him smiling for the first time. When he sees his co-pilot who bombed the Kashmir school, he goes to talk to him. His wife takes the car and drives their children home.

In the next scene we see him being notified that his family has died in a car accident.

The flashback ends and we see Captain Karan finally switching on the radio to respond to Kiran’s attempts at communication. Kiran tells him that she is ready to negotiate with him and asks about his conditions. Captain Karan says that his first condition is that he will only communicate with Kiran. As soon as he says this, Kale immediately interrupts them. Kale tries to assert his dominance over Captain Karan. Karan tells him that Kale thinks he is a terrorist and is trying to establish his position rather than understanding the situation. Kale becomes cocky and almost slips in a joke about his wife’s death in between their conversation. Now Captain Karan is really pissed off. A manic look crosses his face as he asks Kale to repeat what he just said.  In a fit of anger, he threatens a midair crash with a passing plane. Kiran tries to handle the situation but Karan silences her. Tensions are high at this moment. Kale being the utter fool completes the joke. Captain Karan accelerates towards the passing plane but goes off course at the last moment. He switches off the radio again and swallows the same medications he was advised not to take by his wife in the flashbacks.

Now, we see Kiran and Kale talking. Kale tells her that he has orders from the defence minister to take over this situation. Kiran threatens him with information about his affair with an ex-employee which she has learned from her journalist friend. Kale loses all his arrogance and starts talking about cooperation and joint control of this operation. In the next scene we see Kale ordering his subordinate to do a background check on Kiran.

Back on the communication channel, Kiran tells Captain Karan that Kale has been removed from the control room. Captain Karan tells her about his second condition; no one will come close to the plane before 30 minutes of him landing. Kiran agrees to this condition.

He tells her that he is heading towards the airport right away.

We see Karan's flashback again. He is drunk and crying. It appears that he is in therapy again but as the camera angle shifts we learn that all this time he was talking to his dead wife’s photo. He tells her that suicide is the only way he can meet her again.

As we return to the present timeline, we see that Captain Karan has noticed fighter jets tailing him on the radar. Karan asks Kiran to get them removed. Kiran realises that the jets are sent by Kale and tries to calm Karan down by telling him that the jets are there just as a safety precaution.  But Karan is already having flashbacks of the battlefield. He gets dissociated from reality and starts talking in Air Force lingo. He informs the control room that he is going to engage with the enemy and accelerates towards a thunderstorm.

This episode had a slow and uninteresting start with too much detail shared about the lives of passengers. . Fortunately the episode picks the pace in the middle.

Even though Captain Karan is the shady character in this show, I personally consider Kale to be the antagonist. Everything he says or does is wrong and frustrating.

I think the funniest moment in the show was when Dhruv realizes that the Australian woman, Sarah, who he is trying to flirt with knows how to speak Hindi this whole time. He is extremely embarrassed when he realises all the innuendoes he was making have been understood perfectly.

Episode Rating-4/5
