The Family Man Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: Patriots

Things are not what they seem. The scooter bomber's identity is finally revealed!

The Family Man Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: Patriots

The fourth episode of The Family Man starts with Kareem asking Nissar about a guest list and floor plan. In the last episode, Kareem left his hostel with his partners, Iqbal and Nissar in a van. They dress up as delivery boys for a food catering service and also make their van look appropriate for it. It seems as if they’re planning an attack but its details aren’t clear.

Without any information about Kareem and his partners, TASC tries to track their location through their phone numbers. The last location that comes up is Bhendi Bazaar. Srikant’s boss is angry with the team for letting Kareem slip by. Srikant requests him to issue a search warrant for his hostel room and orders Force One to go to Bhendi Bazaar and evacuate it.

In the next scene, we see Suchi at home with her kids. Turns out she has finally agreed to join Arvind’s startup as she texts him “I’m in”. He wants to celebrate and they agree to meet later that day. Arvind’s messages make her happy. Only time will tell if this is the beginning of a new relationship.

Meanwhile, police search Kareem’s hostel room. Things start to look up as his laptop is found and taken in to custody.

Moosa is still in the hospital where he forms a connection with the nurse taking care of him. He tells her stories from his time in ISIS and also expresses regret at getting involved with the terrorist organisation. The nurse feels sorry for him and tells him to stay strong. They share a brief intimate moment as they blush and hold hands.

The people at TASC try to decrypt Kareem’s laptop. Suchi is out with Arvind when Srikant calls her. She tells him she’s out for some work and that she will talk to him later. Srikant senses her tone and feels that she is lying. Again, making use of the magic of TASC’s interface, he finds out Suchi’s location which is a posh hotel in Juhu. Enraged, he takes off from his office and JK accompanies him.

Srikant and JK arrive at the hotel in Juhu, sit near Suchi and Arvind’s table and pretend to be unaware of their presence. Arvind and Suchi seem to be having a good time. Arvind spots Srikant. Suchi is surprised and goes up to talk to him. Both of them lie about their reasons for being there and the disconnection in their relationship comes through very clearly in this scene. Srikant immediately leaves the hotel feeling disheartened and jealous.

Force One reaches Bhendi Bazaar and tells Srikant that it will be difficult to evacuate such a busy locality. TASC continues with the process of decrypting Kareem’s laptop. In the next scene, we see Kareem and his partners ready to carry out their mission.

Finally, TASC gets access to Kareem’s laptop. Srikant and his team look at his recent activity and find the last video that he had seen of a politician inciting cow vigilante mobs. This is the video he got from the dropbox in the last episode. The politician in the video is MP Deshpande who runs a Gau Rakshak Seva. He lives in Bhendi Bazaar and has a birthday party today at his home. Now, all the dots connect and everything starts making sense - Kareem is planning an attack at the MP’s home.

TASC, Force One and other security units station themselves outside MP Deshpande’s house. Kareem’s van approaches but he and his partners are shocked at seeing the security units there. This scene is remarkably shot in one take from inside the van. The camera is stationed at the backseat with Nissar while Iqbal drives and Kareem sits on the passenger seat in front. We get to see the panic of the terrorists from inside the car at close quarters. They immediately reverse the van and drive frantically only to be blocked by security forces in all directions. In a fit of rage, Nissar steps out of the van to face them one on one, however, he is gunned down. A bullet is shot inside the van which kills Iqbal. Hastily, Kareem runs out of the car and manages to hide in the dark of the night. When his path is clear, he again runs from his hiding place but is gunned down by an officer, leaving him dead.

Kareem’s van is checked and what is found in it is shocking. No, it isn’t a high-end bomb. They find huge vessels of beef at the back of the vehicle. As it turns out, Kareem planned to serve beef to the politician and his whole family. He hadn’t planned any attack. The spies are left disappointed and upset at their misjudgment. Srikant bears his boss’s anger. Higher authorities at TASC decide to concoct a story about Kareem and his partners being terrorists who got killed in an encounter to save TASC’s integrity.

Srikant comes home in a drunken state. He is highly disappointed in himself. He and Suchi argue about her meeting with Arvind earlier that day. Their argument turns bitter as he ends up feeling like a loser and she angrily goes back into her room. The next morning, the story of the encounter is all over news channels with debates happening actively on the issue.

A dejected Srikant ruminates on the events of the previous day. He doesn’t understand why Kareem made use of the drop box if he wasn’t a terrorist. He considers the possibility of someone setting Kareem up for the crime. We don’t get any information about the scooter bomber. But wait, the last scene shows the release from the police station of the four boys who were arrested for allegedly being anti-national in the last episode. One of the boys looks like him, the scooter bomber!
