The Family Man Season 1 Episode 2 Recap: Sleepers

A bomb explosion, two terrorists in hospital and introduction of a new character- Kareem

The Family Man Season 1 Episode 2 Recap: Sleepers

The second episode opens with Srikant in the hospital because of high blood sugar levels. The doctor reprimands him for his unhealthy eating and drinking habits. He gets a call about a scooter bomb at Kala Ghoda. JK and Srikant arrive at the scene along with the bomb disposal squad. Then comes the riveting moment when one of the members works his hands to diffuse the bomb. Everyone breathes a sigh of relief as he cuts a red wire and gives a thumbs up on the successful completion of the job. However, in an unexpected turn of events, the bomb explodes leaving the characters and the audience in a state of shock.

Back at their office, Srikant and his team face the brunt of their boss. Srikant believes that this is the work of a lone wolf instead of many sleeper cells and is pissed at the fact that the mechanical systems of TASC couldn’t detect a red flag early on.

Then, we are taken to the hospital where Srikant checks up with the state of the two prisoners - Asif and Moosa. While Asif is in a coma, Moosa is in a better condition to talk. On the condition of being allowed to meet his mother, Moosa tells Srikant the little information that he has about ISIS and Asif, which isn’t very substantial to join any dots in the case.

In the next scene, we see Srikant in the car, accompanying his boss to the airport. Their discussion ranges from their families and the amount of uncertainty in their field of work and how it sometimes meddles with their life at home.

The scene changes to Quetta in Balochistan, Pakistan. Here, we see Major Sameer in a meeting with his co-conspirators where they passionately talk about Mission Zulfiqar and its fighters.

Elsewhere, Suchitra is at work teaching along with Arvind, the man she was seen texting in the last episode. As they discuss the monotony of their jobs, Arvind offers her a job at the company he is going to start. Although Suchitra denies his offer, we see a bit of hesitation in her denial which might mean that she changes her decision in the future.

Meanwhile, the issue of Dhriti’s suspension from school looms in front of Srikant. Like a romantic hero in a movie who wins back his upset lover by fighting off the goons that he himself had sent in the first place, Srikant manages to send an official demolition notice to Dhriti’s school. He stages a ‘right place, right time’ moment when he arrives at the same time at the school as the authorities that arrive to demolish the building. One phone call to the higher authorities and the school is freed of all charges. His heroic act makes the principal cancel Dhriti’s suspension and this also becomes a matter of discussion at the dinner table back home.

Suchitra tries to find the right moment to talk to Srikant and brings up the topic of her job change. This catapults into a fight between them about sharing responsibilities and understanding each other’s jobs. However, yet again, Srikant rushes off in the middle of their discussion when a colleague alerts him about a red flag in the case of the scooter-bomber. TASC gets to know about a Facebook group of three members who work for a gaming company. A background check on them shows each of them having links with suspected leads in Syria. Srikant’s boss calls a team meeting wherein the next course of action is decided - to catch all the three men together in their work premises.

The team reaches their office at the IT company, successfully capturing two men, while the third manages to escape the building. Outside, Srikant is on a call with his wife and she is adamant about carrying on their unfinished discussion about her job change. On spotting the escaping man, Srikant cuts the call and we see a hilarious chase between Srikant, JK, and the suspect.

Finally, the third man is also caught and all three of them are put into different cells for interrogation to reach the scooter-bomber and the larger entity responsible for these blasts.

We’re taken back to Quetta where a mysterious scene unfolds. A doctor is secretly given a message. The next scene clarifies what this message is. Srikant’s boss tells him about a tip from Balochistan alerting TASC from Mission Zulfiqar which also has links with the incident of the hijacked ship in Kochi. The doctor in Quetta must be the one who gave this tip. Sensing the gravity of the situation, Srikant bolts into the interrogation room with a gun which prompts the three captive men to reveal the truth. We learn that the three of them had to collect unscrupulous material from a dropbox outside Victoria College’s Hostel where supposedly their leader or “bhai'' also lives.

The last scene shows us a man named Kareem in a movie hall with his friend (or girlfriend), unwilling to stand for the national anthem before the movie plays. He is beaten up by the people around him and his friend drops him home at - wait for it - Victoria College’s Hostel!

This episode leaves a lot of questions unanswered and keeps the audience’s curiosity about whether Mission Zulfiqar will materialise or not.
