The Family Man Season 1 Episode 1 Recap: The Family Man

Srikant struggles to balance life at home and at work

The Family Man Season 1 Episode 1 Recap: The Family Man

The audience is thrown on a ship in the middle of a sea in Kochi with strange men. The ship has been hijacked by three terrorists - Asif, the leader of the gang, Aboobacker, his right hand and Moosa, a software engineer-turned mujahid. The Indian Coast Guard catches up with them and arrests the three men.

Just after the intro, enters our hero, Srikant Tiwari, practising yoga in the park. Then, we’re introduced to his wife and two kids. Theirs is a family just like any other middle-class family. At the breakfast table, while the kids eat (or don’t), their mother gives them the classic ‘mom scolding’ that every household is incomplete without.

Srikant drives the children to school while the siblings take digs at each other and their father. Atharv is very concerned about his elder sister, Dhriti and her long list of boyfriends which he intimates his dad about. This young boy’s character adds greatly to the comical respite of the show. After the “Main 6 kilometer chal ke, nadi paar karke school jaata tha aur tumhe dekho” story, the kids are dropped off at their school. All this while Srikant has been ignoring calls from his friend and colleague, JK.

Owing to Srikant’s Vada Pao obsession, he and JK reach late to work and as it turns out they work for Indian Intelligence under TASC (Threat Analysis and Surveillance Cell) whose function is to predict and control security threats to the country. Their boss gives them the task to investigate the case about the hijacked ship in Kochi that the episode started with. They are told that Asif is a wanted terrorist who is responsible for many terrorist attacks in the past. The three men are to be flown in from Kochi to Mumbai for interrogation which will be facilitated by Force One, another unit of the Indian Intelligence. Zoya, a new recruit is given the work briefing by JK. She ends up joining them in their investigation.

As the three of them reach the airport to receive the terrorists, they meet Pasha from Force One, who is responsible for the terrorists’ smooth transfer from the airport to the place of interrogation. While they wait for the flight to land, Srikant gets a call from his daughter’s school. The principal asks him  to come immediately because his daughter has been caught with some tablets which his daughter describes as anti-spasmodic tablets. He reaches the school only to be given a long  lecture by the principal about her daughter’s behaviour.

Meanwhile, the terrorists arrive at the airport and are being taken for interrogation in a van. But guess what? They are not amateur terrorists. They manage to break free, kill the officers in the van and run off into a village nearby. Srikant is still in the middle of the principal’s lecture when he receives updates about the terrorists’ escape from JK. He immediately rushes off, leaving his daughter and the matter of her suspension from school hanging in the air.

JK, Zoya, Pasha and his men carry the hunt for the terrorists in the village. Pasha is very hot-blooded and gives orders to shoot at sight. In his rage, he guns down Asif and Aboobacker while Moosa manages to escape despite getting shot. This is when Srikant arrives and tries to talk sense into Pasha. They need Moosa alive so that they can interrogate him.  In a moment of courage, Srikant goes inside Moosa’s place of hiding, unarmed. He sits there  to negotiate with him and assures him that he won’t be killed if he surrenders. We find out that Moosa is a software engineer who was stuck in Syria and joined hands with Asif just to come back to his mother in Kochi. Srikant plays on his emotions and is able to disarm him.

In the next scene we’re taken to Balochistan in Pakistan where the villain enters. Remember the cute guy from the movie, Mary Kom who plays Mary Kom’s husband? Yes, he’s the bad guy here. Major Sameer, as he is called, meets with a highly wanted terrorist, Faizan. Major Sameer talks to Faizan about recruiting a new Mujahid from Syria as the previous one (Moosa) is in the captivity of the Indian Intelligence. Sameer also takes him in confidence and tells him about his sinister plan to carry out a massive terror attack in India which would compel India to declare war on Pakistan. In the turmoil of war, Sameer’s terror group will conduct a coup in Pakistan to overthrow the government. This mission is called Mission Zulfiqar. This operation requires a new Mujahid boy. After listening to him intently, Faizan apprises him of a passionate boy who is known for his unique style of wreaking havoc. This scene ends without giving many details about who the boy is.

When Srikant reaches home, his wife is angry with him for not picking up the kids from school. Dhriti has also been suspended because Srikant had to leave in a hurry. His family isn’t aware of the kind of work he does. Suchi, his wife, asks him to fix their daughter’s school problem by the next day and Srikant promises to do so. In the next scene, we find Dhriti texting a boy. Dhriti was protecting him by claiming the pills belonged to her. It seems she likes this boy.  Her mother also has something going on with another man herself. Although their text messages do not give us much information it is enough to tell us that something is fishy.

This episode ends with the scene of the young passionate Mujahid riding his scooter. This is definitely the same boy that Faizan was referring to. His scooter contains a bomb which he parks on a busy street of Mumbai. Morning comes and…tick tock tick…boom.

All in all, this episode is a great start to a gripping story, leaving the viewers with the right amount of information that they need to watch the next episode. It will be interesting to see how future events unfold in the life of Srikant and his family members.
