The Big Bull: Movie Review

The Big Bull was released on Hotstar on 8 April 2021. The story is based on the life of late businessman, Harshad Mehta. But, most of the scenes in the film are fabricated. Abhishek Bachchan is seen in the lead role.

The Big Bull is the journey of a middle class man, Hemant Shah who goes from being an ordinary person to becoming the highest taxpayer of India. Hemant Shah is a sharp eyed and clever businessman who writes his own destiny. His determination and sly mind take him to great heights. But, his ego and greed becomes his downfall.

The Big Bull did not do well. The scenes of the film are very disjointed and it seems that the director is trying to rush through the film. Many different stories from the life of Hemant Shah are fused together and overlap with each other. There is no clarity in many scenes and it created great confusion for me. The film delved into the world of banking in a chaotic way. Perhaps a banker would appreciate the jargon, but to a layperson like me, it failed to be engaging. The director’s attempt to showcase the whole life story of Hemant Shah in a two hour film left me wanting more.

I am a huge fan of Abhishek Bachchan, but his performance in The Big Bull left me highly disappointed. His struggle with the Gujarati accent was clear and made for an unconvincing portrayal of his character. Even the performance of Ileana D’Cruz was abysmal.

The background music in the film was not very appealing. Here, I can say that the music director did not do a satisfactory job. If not the film, at least the background music should have been engaging. In most parts of the film, the background music did not bring out the essence of the scene.

Apart from the cinematography, I did not find any other aspect of the film the least  bit pleasing.

The Big Bull is directed by Kookie Gulati. It is produced by Ajay Devgn Ffilms and Anand Pandit Motion Pictures. The co-stars include Ileana D’Cruz, Sohum Shah and Nikita Dutta.

If you’re really interested in learning more about Harshad Mehta’s life, I’d suggest watching Scam 1992. But no matter what you do, don’t switch this movie on. Save yourself a few hours and give this movie a skip.
