Sunflower Season 1 Episode 5 Recap: A Crush
In the fifth episode of Sunflower, Sonu further complicates the case for himself by going to sell a carton full of syringes to a local chemist.

The episode begins with Mr. Ahuja dreaming of a past event. We see him asking Mr. Kapoor politely to not park in his designated parking area. Mr. Kapoor does not listen. After multiple such requests, Mr. Kapoor and Mr. Ahuja get into a scuffle. The dream ends and we see Mr. Ahuja mocking Mr. Kapoor in his sleep.
Next, we see sub-inspector Tambe and his team at the dead Mr. Kapoor’s house looking for the coconut shell he drank from before dying.
Meanwhile, Sonu, leaves for work with a carton in his hands. Two policemen follow him. Sonu takes the carton to a chemist shop and offers to sell it to the shopkeeper. The shopkeeper denies Sonu’s request. Sonu insists that the shopkeeper buy the contents of the carton from him but the shopkeeper is adamant. Eventually, Sonu asks the shopkeeper to keep the carton and its contents for free.
In the next scene, we see Kamini and the building watchman who is also her boyfriend, being interrogated by the police.
While looking for the coconut shell in literally every corner of the building as per Tambe’s command, policemen are unable to find the coconut but get their hands on a bottle of bromethalin instead. The other policemen who followed Sonu to the chemist shop recover the carton he gave to the shopkeeper. The carton is full of brand new syringes.
Tambe goes to Sonu’s office to pick him up. Mr. Tambe treats Sonu with Chinese food in the police station since it’s lunchtime. Just when Sonu is about to eat, Tambe brings the bromethalin bottle and the carton of syringes in front of him.
When asked about the bromethalin bottle he used to kill the mouse in his house earlier, Sonu claimed that the bottle was lost. Perhaps he told the truth because we saw the bottle falling off the window edge in the first episode itself. But who knew that the bottle would not break from an eight-storey fall, rather land safely in a nest (where the policemen found it). Tambe asks Sonu about the bottle. He is as shocked to see it as we are.
Then Tambe asks Sonu about the syringes. Sonu tells Tambe that before joining the cosmetic company he works for currently, he worked at a pharma company which he left two months back. He explains that this box of syringes was left with him by mistake so he started using them to inject poison in atta balls for the mouse to consume it. After the mouse died, these syringes were of no use to him so he decided to sell them off to a local chemist. Tambe and DG do not believe Sonu’s tale. To check if Sonu is telling the truth, Tambe calls Sonu’s former manager. The manager attests to the fact that Sonu was an employee. Tambe and DG were not expecting this response, however, there is no evidence to implicate Sonu. So after finishing lunch at the police station, Sonu leaves for his office.
Aanchal, Sonu’s crush at the office, comes and asks him out. As a viewer, I wasn’t expecting this to happen at all. It is Friday night. The two go to a club. Initially in the show, Sonu claimed to not do drugs. However, the innocent man is fed some powder by Anchal in the club. Anchal also snorts some of it herself and the two engage in some weird pointless conversations. This scene came across as extremely forced and not in keeping with the plotline.
The closing scene of the fifth episode is in Anchal’s bedroom. Sonu wakes up to find himself in unfamiliar surroundings. Before the screen turns black, we see a glimpse of Anchal hooking her bra implying that there was some action during the night.
While the case investigation seems legitimate and engaging in the template of the show, I am still not able to understand the significance of the detailed showcase of Sonu’s life at work. His behaviour in all the other scenes seems enough to convey his eccentricity. Perhaps, his work-life might materialize as a major plot in the show later on. If not, it only slows down the pacing of an otherwise interesting story.
