Special OPS Season 1 Episode 6 Recap

In this episode of Special OPS, Himmat’s team gets within shooting range of Ikhlaq Khan.

Special OPS Season 1 Episode 6 Recap

Himmat’s agents prepare to go to Baku, Azerbaijan for the possible capture of Ikhlaq Khan as he might be present at Farooq’s meeting.

Juhi also gets a message about the commencement of the operation. She asks Himmat’s secretary if Avinash is coming too. The secretary replies in affirmative. This scene hints to romantic inclination between Avinash and Juhi

Back at Himmat’s house, Pari has returned home. It is the morning of her birthday and Himmat asks her what she wants as a gift. Pari replies that she wants him to join her for lunch today.  After she leaves, Himmat expresses his annoyance as he believes Pari intentionally asked for something she knew he didn’t have time for.

Hafiz, Ismail and Farooq reach Baku. Farooq surreptitiously transmits a GPS feed of his live location to Himmat in Delhi.

The Agents reach a safe house in Baku and call Himmat for further instructions. Himmat tells them that they will find Ikhlaq in Fali Oil Fields as he is attending a business deal on behalf of the Jamaat there. Avinash is going to lead Operation Shadow, Ruhani and Bala will be at base and will provide technical info while Avinash and Juhi will be present at the field.

Himmat reminds them that he does not want any member of his team dying in this operation.

Avinash gets his sniper rifle ready and reaches Farooq’s location with Juhi. Avinash and Juhi have some banter in the car signifying unresolved tensions in their relationship.

Hafiz meets the Russian businessman and they wait for Ikhlaq Khan to arrive. Avinash finds a high rise and sets his rifle. Ikhlaq Khan’s car finally arrives. Hafiz gets a call from Ikhlaq Khan. Hafiz tells the businessman that Ikhlaq Khan wants him to join him in his car because of the harsh weather.

Both Hafiz and Russian Businessman go inside the car but we do not see Ikhlaq Khan. Avinash tells Himmat that he has a clean shot for the Russian and Hafiz but Himmat orders him to stand down. Avinash pleads with him to give him orders to shoot both of them down but Himmat refuses. Ikhlaq’s car with tinted windows leaves the meeting spot.

Farooq tries to hide his disappointment as he signs Hafiz’s deal papers.

Mission is aborted.

Back in the car with Hafiz, Farooq is asked why he looks so downcast. Farooq replies that he is disappointed that he failed to meet the strongest link of the Jamaat, Ikhlaq Khan today. Hafiz, now suspicious, tells him that he had never told Farooq, Ikhlaq Khan’s name. Tensions are really high at this moment but Farooq without missing a beat, notifies him that he read the name on the papers Hafiz had asked him to sign.

In Delhi, Himmat misses his audit inquiry and the committee gets irritated.

Cut to the house with two ladies who are suspected suicide bombers. The older woman leaves to buy medicines and we see the younger one, Sara, watching cartoons. The scene is eerie as Sara is too old to be watching cartoons.

She suddenly sees someone hiding in a room. Sara gets a knife from the kitchen counter and as she walks towards the room, a man stalks her from behind and attacks her. There is a long scuffle in which Sara tries slashing multiple times toward the intruder but fails to wound him.

Now the perspective changes and we see the older woman coming back to the house. As she unlocks the front door she hears Sara screaming. We see Sara fighting no one and slashing the knife in the air. The older woman takes the knife from her hands and tries to calm her down.

We learn Sara is schizophrenic.

Himmat and his team are talking about Operation Shadow. Avinash speculates that Ikhlaq Khan already knew about their plan. Himmat rejects this idea. Farooq joins their call and notifies them about a marriage Hafiz has asked him to attend this evening in the hotel they were staying at. Himmat asks Farooq if Hafiz knows Ikhlaq’s location. Farooq replies in the affirmative. Himmat makes a new plan to nab Hafiz at the marriage.

Himmat walks out of his office and sees Chaddha and Banerjee talking to his senior. Himmat immediately realises his mistake. Himmat tells the senior he had some work. The senior informs him that the committee has decided to suspend the inquiry and his impending requisition of Rs 40 Lakh will not be cleared. Also the Secret Service Fund will not be authorizing his payments anymore. Chaddha and Banerjee, expecting Himmat to plead with them, are baffled when Himmat replies with a relaxed ‘Okay Sir’ and leaves.

At the wedding, all of Himmat’s agents along with Farooq, Ismail and Hafiz are present. Bala follows Hafiz to the restrooms. While returning Hafiz comes face to face with Bala and instantly understands his intentions. They start fighting but Bala is on the weaker side as he fails to defend himself from Hafiz’s expert blows. In the end we see Hafiz snap Bala’s neck.

I liked this episode and the ease with which the inquiry narrative came to an end. We are finally finished with the history of Himmat’s 19 year long operation. Now the whole focus is on capturing Ikhlaq Khan.

The side narrative of the suicide bomber women was very interesting and did not feel like a filler.

I like how detail-oriented the show is. If you pause at the scenes with Himmat’s laptop you will notice his webcam is jammed with a piece of paper, which is quite apt since he works in the secret service.

The highlight of this episode is when Farooq expertly manages to stop his deer-caught-in-the-headlights expression when Hafiz catches him accidentally slipping Ikhlaq Khan’s name in the conversation.

With the end of episode 6 of Special OPS my suspicion of who Ikhlaq really is is stronger but the real intrigue is learning how Himmat will find out about it and also Farooq’s reaction.

Episode Rating 5/5
