Special OPS Season 1 Episode 3

In this episode of Disney +Hotstar’s Special OPS, we learn the reason behind Farooq Ali’s mission in UAE

Special OPS Season 1 Episode 3

The episode begins on a personal note and we see Himmat worrying about his daughter, who is partying late at night. His wife is calm. She already knows Himmat has a police officer tailing their daughter in the nightclub for her safety. But Himmat is still tense. Earlier his wife had told him that their 16 year old daughter, Pari might be in a relationship with someone.

When Pari comes back, he clones her phone. The next day we see him meet Abbas, the police officer tailing his daughter. Abbas gets a hacker to put trackers in Pari’s phone. The scene cuts to flashes of someone trying to take photographs of Himmat.

Himmat leaves for his audit inquiry meeting and Abbas gets a call. We learn that Abbas is ordered by a high-profile politician to do a background check on Himmat Singh.

During the inquiry, Himmat is asked where Waseem Karachiwala was taken for interrogation in Dubai.

Flashback to a closed ware-house in Dubai.

Waseem is being interrogated. When Waseem says something offensive, the woman agent with Farooq, Juhi, starts beating him violently with an iron rod.

Even after the thrashing, Waseem is silent. He tries to manipulate Farooq using the religion angle but fails to bring him to his side. He suddenly sees a phone kept at a little distance from him. Joining the dots, he asks who was on the other side listening to their conversation. The scene cuts and we see Himmat Singh back in his office in Delhi.

When Farooq tells Waseem that they are going to find and kill their leader, Waseem mocks them and tells them during the Parliament attacks their leader walked past their army and police easily. He is convinced that they are never going to catch him.

Himmat inquires about Ikhlaq Khan and Waseem laughs and says something in Arabic. Seconds later, Waseem stabs himself with an iron rod.

The flashback ends and Banerjee is very interested in Himmat’s story. Chaddha asks him to go on.

We learn that after this incident, Farooq decides to stay in Dubai to meet and dismantle Waseem’s contacts in the UAE. He spends months cooped up in a small cabin in a boat to

hide from ISI and Dubai Police who are out to get him.

After the situation gets better, Farooq shifts to Dubai and starts his mission.

2012

Farooq meets Ilyaz Khan, Waseem’s driver, gets him drunk and learns about Ismail Hasan. Hasan is a rich businessman who provided monetary support to Waseem’s terrorism attacks.

Farooq enters Ismail Hasan’s office disguised as a cleaner and finds out that Hasan and his boss, Hafiz Ali are shipping tycoons. Farooq informs Himmat that he believes Hafiz Ali is the lead that will connect them with Ikhlaq Khan.

Farooq and Himmat hatch a plan to lure out a middleman who will connect Farooq with Hafiz.

Everyday Farooq goes to a nightclub and spends huge amounts of cash there. After a weekly routine of acting like a spoiled rich businessman for almost 2 months, the nightclub owner, Javed, finally confronts Farooq and asks if he wants to invest money with him. Farooq asks for Javed’s help in fixing a situation with his foreign cash. Javed ends up introducing Farooq to Hafiz Ali. They finalise a deal. We also learn that the mysterious woman we saw with Farooq in earlier episodes is Sonya, Hafiz Ali’s account handler.

Back in the present, Chaddha and Banerjee start inquiring about the expenses of Himmat’s other agents. They want to know why vacation bills and soccer match tickets of his agents are filed under government expenses. Himmat thinks about all the secret missions he has approved and refuses to answer to save the identity of his agents.

Day 3 of the inquiry ends and we see Himmat getting a call regarding the death of Ismail Khan’s younger brother by Hafiz Ali. He is seen driving his car when he gets a notification on his phone tracking his daughter’s messages. The message reads ‘I love you, Sohail’. Himmat gets even more tense. Suddenly, a car stops in front of his car and fires a round of bullets at his windshield.

This episode gives us a little information about Himmat’s personal life. It does not seem like a filler narrative since we were given hints about him being worried about his daughter in earlier episodes too. We also have his sentimental side when he arranges for Abbas’s family’s Haj.

I also like Farooq’s character. Though he is young and ambitious, he is not written off as an arrogant and one-man-army type figure.

Himmat’s presence was missed in this episode but by the end of the episode the cliffhanger brought back my wavering attention.

Something that really confused me was- How is everyone speaking in Hindi in Dubai?

Anyway, this was again a masterpiece of an episode and I loved it. And I recently realised that the writer of this show is also the writer of cult classics like Special 26, Baby and A Wednesday. No wonder this is such a brilliant series.
