Shakuntala Devi: Trailer Breakdown - Balan lifts the air with her performance
Shakuntala Devi is a biographical movie about the celebrated mathematician, starring Vidya Balan and Sanya Malhotra in lead roles.
Shakuntala Devi is an upcoming movie based on the mathematician, Shakuntala Devi’s life. Vidya Balan plays the mathematician’s role. The trailer opens with an introduction to Balan's jovial character who's in love with the magic in maths and numbers. Balan is dressed in overly dramatic retro costumes, which Bollywood always does to make the screen look more colourful.
A younger Shakuntala is seen making her mark at school as she solves complex calculations within seconds. Later in life, the girl goes on to become a worldwide sensation when she proves the computer wrong. The world calls her a ‘Human Computer’. Balan has depicted the character's vibes and energy beautifully. Her deafening laugh adds extra colour to the already vibrant scene.
But unlike maths, Shakuntala's life isn't magical. She doesn't have a good relationship with her husband. Her daughter, played by Sanya Malhotra, has tonnes of grudges against her mother. It looks like the problems in Shakuntala’s life stem from the dilemma of prioritising mathematics v/s motherhood.
Shakuntala's problems don't end there. The trailer seems to suggest that she shot a man once. This is creepy. But the question is, is this incident reality-based or just a spice-up?
Sanya, who rose to fame with her debut movie Dangal, has given an impressive performance in the trailer. Amit Sadh who has been in many interviews lately with the success of Breathe: Into the Shadows, too can be seen in the trailer. Looks like he's playing Sanya's husband.
The mother-daughter rivalry seems to be the prime concern of the movie. If the trailer is anything to go by, the movie is full of unnecessary drama and exaggeration. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping the movie is good and that it doesn’t fall into the trap of typical Bollywood cliches.
The movie, directed by Anu Menon is all set to release on 31st July 2020 on Amazon Prime.
