Scam 1992 Season 01 Episode 10 Recap: Main History Banana Chahta Hoon

Many people suffer severely because of Harshad's financial scams. Bhushan also turns away from Harshad leading to a great crisis. As this is the final episode, we get to know the end of Harshad’s story.

Scam 1992 Season 01 Episode 10 Recap: Main History Banana Chahta Hoon

The episode starts  where the previous episode left off. Mr. Jethmalani blames the Prime Minister of India and says in the conference that the scam should not be named the ‘Harshad Mehta scam’, but the ‘PV Narasimha Rao scam’. Harshad is tainting the image of those in power, therefore, it is necessary to take major steps to prevent this.

The allegations against the Prime Minister could not be proven and remain a rumor. But, Harshad is now banned from the stock market. With a drastic fall in sensex, everyone loses trust in Harshad.

Harshad’s friend, Rahil takes his own life after days of struggling financially. When Harshad and Ashwin go to pay their respect to the departed, Rahil’s wife humiliates Harshad by saying that Rahil is not the only one; he is responsible for many such lives. She blames Harshad for pretending to be so trustworthy and asks him to leave immediately.

Sucheta comes to interview Harshad. She tells him that so many people lost their life savings and even suffered death because of him. She asks if he will be able to revive the market and improve those people’s lives. To this, Harshad answers that he is not capable enough to do that. He feels guilty for being the reason behind their losses but shamelessly justifies himself by saying that even he faced a huge financial crisis in the incident.

1994. Ram Jethmalani tells Harshad that the only way to resolve the case as soon as possible is by requesting special courts to settle all claims.

Bhushan tells Harshad that one more case has been filed against him and the Settlement Commission cannot provide him immunity in an ongoing case. This creates a very tense atmosphere in his house

The scene jumps back to Sucheta’s interview with Harshad. He tells her that he has been discriminated against. Many FIRs are charged against him and a number of agencies are unnecessarily behind him. He tells Sucheta that his biggest crime is his identity- Harshad Mehta.

1995. Ashwin studies law books. He believes that in order to defend themselves from all the cases against them, they should have knowledge of the laws.

Sucheta’s interview with Harshad continues. She asks him to narrate his side of the story. But, Harshad says that after all this time when he has already been behind bars and experienced the worst phase of his life, to listen to his side of the story is pointless.

Debashis proofreads a book named 'The Scam'. The book is based on the 1992 financial scam led by Harshad Mehta and is written by Sucheta and Debashis.

After the proofreading, Debashis sits beside Sucheta. He tells her that he knows the name of the source who constantly gave Sucheta the inside information. Sucheta was surprised as even she did not know his name. On asking for it, Debashis cleverly keeps a condition. He proposes to her and Sucheta says yes! After the agreement, Debashis reveals the name of her source.

Their wedding is the only happy event in the episode which finally relaxed my mood after watching the unrest in Harshad’s life.

Meanwhile, Harshad’s assets are auctioned by the custodian. Harshad looks helplessly at his properties being snatched away from him.

In 1996, PV Narsimha Rao lost his position as Prime Minister during the election. Harshad is no longer perceived as the government’s enemy.

There are seventy two criminal and six hundred civil cases against him. Now that it is difficult for Harshad to step into the share market again, he decides to write a column in a newspaper, giving advice on the market.

A delivery package arrives at Sucheta’s office with a bunch of Harshad's photographs. Within the next few seconds, she gets a call from Harshad. She is completely shocked when Harshad asks her to choose a picture of him fora financial column of Times of India that he is going to write. However, Mr. Nair, the man helping him in this, informs Harshad later that the top management has issues with his column. Harshad instantly knows that he is talking about Sucheta. Mr. Nair tells him that a Hindi newspaper, Navdesh Samachar is ready to print his column.

In 1998, India conducted three nuclear tests in Pokhran. This causes panic among the  foreign investors and they pull out their money and the stock market ultimately melts.

Sucheta calls her source. She tells him about the sudden fall in the prices of Sterlite and Videocon after the nuclear test. She has heard that a company called Damyanti Group is rigging their prices and is now facing payment default at BSE. But, people at BSE are helping the company. Sucheta guesses that they have taken instructions from Harshad. Now, she wants to know how Harshad is related to the Damyanti Group.

After researching, she gets to know that the directors of Damyanti Group are Jyoti Mehta’s brothers. Debashis suggests giving this information to SEBI.

Year 2000. Ashwin checks Growmore's books. He notices that 27 lakhs shares worth Rs. 300 crores are present in their report to the CBI, but missing from the custodian’s documents. A custodian was appointed by the court to manage the paperwork in Harshad Mehta’s case. Harshad and Ashwin go to the custodian the next day. The custodian promises to  do an investigation.

Bhushan barges into Harshad's office. He is called to the CBI office. But, Bhushan is terrified and is not ready to go. He confesses that the missing 27 lakhs shares were never attached by the court as he had sold them off before the raid.

Harshad is unable to control his anger. He slaps and shouts at Bhushan. But, Bhushan retaliates by saying that he was never valued at Growmore. He was offered to become Harshad’s partner but is not even treated as a clerk in the company. Bhushan blackmails that no threats can frighten him and he will not return the assets at any cost.

Bhushan goes to the CBI office. The officer questions him about the missing assets. Bhushan slyly blames everything on Harshad and Ashwin. He lies that the Mehta brothers have secretly sold all those shares in the open market. He says that Harshad never declared those stocks while his assets were being attached in 1992 and after being released, Harshad transferred all those assets to a front company, eventually selling them. Bhushan cleverly labels it as Harshad’s new scam.

One fine day, the police enter Harshad’s house and arrest him.

A CBI officer questions Harshad on the anonymous shares that he sold. Harshad says that he has not done anything and all of it is planned by his employee, Bhushan. But, the officer does not listen to him. Because of Harshad’s already dented image, it is hard for people to believe him. As it can be seen, the officer brings up the unlimited cash in his bank accounts.I would say the officer is venting his anger on the system of capitalism and how it favours only a few people. Harshad gets arrested afterwards.

Ashwin comes to meet him in the police station. He convinces Harshad that he will soon get him bail on health grounds.

31 December 2001. On this day, when everyone is celebrating the arrival of a new year, Harshad suffers a heart attack in his cell. He constantly calls for his wife, Jyoti. The policemen take him to the hospital. But, unfortunately, Harshad does not make it. He dies as soon as they reach the hospital.

Harshad’s family rushes to the hospital. On seeing him lie dead on a bench, Jyoti breaks down. Everyone is taken aback. After watching all the episodes with so much excitement, this scene became very painful for me to watch as I got connected to the characters. Harshad may have committed financial fraud, but he is an endearing character. His energy and intelligence, his love for his family and ambition make him good if not great.

The song, ‘Mat kar maya ko ahankar’ plays in the background. The song has a very deep meaning. It conveys the futility of chasing money as when one dies, he does not take any of it with him to the next world.

After the scam, many rules are formulated for the share market. But, nothing changes. People with a fraudulent mindset still exploit the system.

The episode ends with the real footage of Harshad Mehta’s interview.
