Satyajit Ray was an Indian filmmaker, writer, author, lyricist, and music composer who primarily worked for the Bengali-speaking parts of united India. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century. He is a pioneer in world cinema, and is known for his humanistic approach to cinema and his control over his films. 

Ray was born on May 2, 1921, in an affluent Bengali family. He was interested in film and music from a young age. After his formal education, he became a student of Indian arts in Rabindranath Tagore’s university in Shantiniketan. However, he returned back to Calcutta in about a year as he was unable to see films in Shantiniketan. Thereafter, Satyajit Ray delved into the field of illustrations and typography. He was also involved in producing many advertising campaigns. In 1947, he founded the first film club in Calcutta, and thereon began his journey of making his first film Pather Panchali. After a series of setbacks in the whole process of producing his first film, the film got made and finally released in August 1955 in Calcutta. The film gradually became a huge success and was screened at the Cannes Film Festival, 1956. It ended up winning numerous awards and brought massive recognition to Ray, thus marking the beginning of his illustrious career as a filmmaker.

The year 2021 marks 100 years of Satyajit Ray. Netflix India released the teaser of an anthology, ‘Ray’ made as an ode to one of the greatest storytellers. The 50-second teaser suggests that it is a series of four films adapted from Satyajit’s Ray’s ingenious writing. The stories are helmed by three critically acclaimed filmmakers, Srijit Mukherji, Abhishek Chaubey, and Vasan Bala. The cast includes Manoj Bajpayee, Gajraj Rao, Ali Fazal, Shweta Basu Prasad, Anindita Bose, Kay Kay Menon, Bidita Bag, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Harshvarrdhan Kapoor, Radhika Madan, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Akansha Ranjan Kapoor among others. The series is scheduled to release on 25th June on Netflix.
