Raat Baki Hai Movie Review

Raat Baaki Hai is a 2021 whodunnit thriller directed by Avinash Das starring Anup Soni, Rahul Dev and Paoli Dam. Screen run time is 89 minutes. You can watch the movie on Zee5 online.

The plot line is woven around the murder of a famous actress. Rajesh Ahlawat (Rahul Dev) is the cop called up to solve the crime. The actress’s fiancé Kathik (Anup Soni) goes on a run when he finds himself being framed for the murder. He ends up in the Royal Palace of his ex, who is now a queen, for shelter from the police. The story is based on the Hindi play Ballygunge 1990.

There are either badly written movies or badly directed movies. Then there are those rare jewels that are both of them together. This movie is that rare jewel. The cherry on top would be the terrific acting.

The movie opens with an unnecessary sex scene, giving us a sign that the director really has no idea what grabs audience attention except for this. The hot-shot cop Ahlawat, soon gets some instructions from a mysterious caller to reach the crime scene where the actress has been murdered.

I guessed who the caller was after 55 minutes of the story since foreshadowing was extremely weak . Also, all the pieces of the puzzles are together by that time stamp. Mystery really loses its appeal if it is that predictable.

The cop has a Haryanvi accent in a Rajasthani setting for some god forsaken reason. And to top it off he’s an alcoholic. He collects evidence around the murder scene and soon has a prime suspect. Another raging alcoholic. Scenes that are meant to be funny fall flat and instead of a smile receive a string of eye-rolls.

The actress's fiancé Karthik reaches the palace for help. He talks to the queen & tells his side of the story to explain his innocence. And behold. We learn he is a raging alcoholic too!

The pace of the story is so slow that maybe at 2x speed it would improve the experience.

Even if one doesn’t watch the movie closely, the plot holes are quite evident. The flashbacks are boring. And with the introduction of each new character, the acting only gets worse.

Maybe a more experienced production could have been the saving grace for the film. Even veteran actors like Anup Soni were overdoing their roles, keeping them far from natural and realistic.

My rating would be 2 stars out of 5
