Raat Akeli Hai: Trailer Breakdown
Netflix releases a new movie on July 31 starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte.
Raat Akeli is the latest from Netflix. The trailer opens with a wedding, a death and an investigation. Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays a cop who instantly tells us that someone within the house is involved in the murder of the master of the house on the night of his wedding.
The trailer suggests that he was marrying his “mistress” and much younger woman played by Radhika Apte.
Netflix, O Netflix! You love bringing the same actors back again and again. Is Radhika Apte the Indian Noah Centino?
Back to the trailer, it seems like none of the family members actually liked the man who died. His daughter seems to talk him down. Others claim not to know him or hint at jealousy as a motive.
Random little clues are thrown in. A cabinet was broken, a gun toted and trigger pulled. It appears that the most obvious story is that his young bride and her lover killed the man. But is it really that easy? Our protagonist doesn’t think so.
Radhika Apte’s character doesn’t speak much and seems to lurk creepily through the house. She is playing mind games with the cop and he’s definitely falling for it. She’s lying and mysterious and maybe dangerous?
There are scenes proving the inspector’s manliness for the sake of the public. Followed by a name. Inspector Jatil Yadav. Ah, finally!
The show ends with a scene between Apte and Siddiqui. He asks her who the murderer could be. And she replies with wiles and vague rhetoric.
If the trailer is anything to go by, the movie will be alright. Not too great, not too bad. It releases July 31.
But the one question I want to ask Netflix is this - How many more “cop investigating a crime” shows do we need? Can Indian OTT content move beyond cops and weddings? I guess only time will tell…
