Most Iconic Roles of Zeenat Aman

One of my first female crushes, Zeenat Aman’s name became synonymous with glamour and beauty in the 70’s and 80’s. Here are some of the most iconic roles brought to life by her performances.

Most Iconic Roles of Zeenat Aman

Janice/Jasmeet

In her breakthrough role of Jasmeet/Janice in Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Zeenat Aman is legendary. A story about a brother searching for his long lost sister set against a backdrop of the hippie boom in the Indian subcontinent, this movie is still extremely watchable. Aman won the award for Best supporting actress for her performance despite massive retaliation in the country against the movie, that many believed glorified drugs and hippie culture.

Roma

A simple girl driven to revenge by the murder of her brother Ramesh by Don, Roma joins Don’s organization with the mission to kill him for his actions. Don inspired several movies including Rajinikanth’s Billa, Don: The Chase Begins Again (2006) and its sequel Don 2 in 2011 featuring Shah Rukh Khan. However, Zeenat Aman’s portrayal of Roma has yet been unmatched.

Roopa

In Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Zeenat Aman is seen as Roopa- a village priest’s daughter with severe burns on the right side of her face and neck. The story revolves around her relationship with engineer Rajiv. While being repulsed by her disfigurement he begins an ‘affair’ with her when she hides her scars and pretends to be someone else. The film explores the difference between physical and spiritual love. Aman as Roopa was considered the pinnacle of oomph at the time and still is by many.

Mohini

Laawaris has to be on this list. While Zeenat’s performance is as great as any mentioned above, her role in this movie was mostly supplemental to the hero’s story. However, this movie was one of the biggest hits of its time and definitely had a role in adding more shine to her already bright stardom.

Sheela

Sheela from Qurbani is a feisty, talented, independent career woman looking for true love. She is sensitive, witty, and all-round awesome (if a little clueless!). This movie has epic evergreen songs like ‘Aap jaisa koi’ and ‘laila o laila’ both pictured on Aman.

Sunita

If the first Zeenat Aman song that you can think of is the beautiful ‘chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko’ then you know why this list would be incomplete without Yaadon ki Baraat. The song is picturized on Aman playing Sunita, Vinay’s love interest and daughter of his rich boss.
