Mimi Trailer Breakdown

Kriti Sanon’s latest collaboration with Maddock Films in Mimi looks like an interesting watch. She is presented as a surrogate mother. Along with her, the film also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Sai Tamhankar, Manoj Pahwa and Supriya Pathak. With this film, Kriti also reunites with her Luka Chuppi (2019) director Laxman Utekar.

Kriti Sanon, in and as Mimi, is a local dancer from a town in Rajasthan. She is offered 20 lakhs to rear the child of an American couple as a surrogate. The fact that she will not be involved in the process of conceiving the child intrigues her. The remuneration amount entices and she agrees to take up the job. Here, the character of Pankaj Tripathi acts as a middleman between Mimi and the American couple. The question of how Mimi will hide her baby bump from her family and neighbours arises. This is when Sai Tamhankar’s character tells Mimi that she can stay with her. What follows is a series of humorous events, until Mimi learns that the American couple doesn’t wish to have the baby now. They want Mimi to abort the child. Mimi’s world goes upside down. Her parents also learn about her pregnancy. When asked about the father of this child by her parents, Mimi declares Pankaj’s character as her partner.

Adapted from the Marathi film Mala Aai Vahhaychy! (2010), the trailer of Mimi suggests the film is an entertainer. The film takes up a sensitive topic like surrogacy. I hope it handles the topic responsibly and doesn’t make a mockery out of it. Apart from that, the trailer also depicts a few religious stereotypes which might act as reinforcers of the divide amongst people through the film.

The chemistry between Pankaj Tripathi and Kriti Sanon has already been witnessed in Bareilly Ki Barfi as the father-daughter duo. Pankaj Tripathi, the most effortless actor, who can easily pull off any role written for him will definitely not disappoint. Kriti Sanon, who reportedly gained 15-kgs for the film, also looks to have done a fine job.

Mimi will premiere on Netflix and Jio Cinemas on July 30.
