Masaba Masaba Season 1 Episode 1 Recap: Rumour Has It

Netflix’s Masaba Masaba gives us an insight into the not-so-glam lives of the mother-daughter duo, Neena and Masaba Gupta.

Masaba Masaba Season 1 Episode 1 Recap: Rumour Has It

The first season of Masaba Masaba opens with a scene of Masaba Gupta walking on the road wearing a red satin dress and looking distressed. We’re taken 24 hours back to find out how she ends up here.

In the morning, Masaba updates her ‘InstaFam’ about the Flair Magazine Awards that night. She then goes for a dress trial and fitting to decide the dress she’ll wear for the night. She has an army of people with her whose job is to dress her up. If I have these many people to help me decide what to wear, it’ll save my indecisive brain a lot of panic before I step out of my house. After rejecting several dresses, Masaba settles for a red satin dress that looks gorgeous on her. Her crew receives a blind item about her. It says there is trouble in paradise as Masaba and her husband, Vinay are heading towards a divorce. Although she brushes it off with a joke, we can see that she is affected by it.

In the next scene, enters Neena Gupta who is learning how to drive. She is very enthusiastic about all the things that people her age generally consider to be pursuits of the young. While talking to her driving teacher, she also expresses her wish to do a main role in a film. Neena’s friend, Mohini calls her and tells her about the blind item about Masaba. Neena tells Mohini that all of this is fake news and Masaba is happily married. Neena is concerned and asks the driving teacher to drop her home.

Kiara Advani visits Masaba’s office for a dress fitting for Kiara’s “Swachh Bharat thing”. Kiara is the typical diva and her overacting makes me cringe. Although kudos to her for pulling off this caricatured character. She puts on a sizzling red dress and pairs it up with a broom to see her final look. Kiara also asks Masaba about the blind item and expresses fake concern for her.

In the car, Neena tries to call Masaba but in vain. She sends Masaba a voice note saying that marriages need to be worked upon. The driving instructor drops Neena home and asks for a selfie with her.

Masaba is at her therapy session. The therapist is Geeta who is the wife of a famous superstar. Masaba vents her frustration about the blind item and also her mother’s concern over it. However, Geeta acts weird and is of no help.

Next, we see Masaba at Gia’s Bar. Gia is her best friend played by Rytasha Rathod. Masaba is upset about the blind item and Gia starts mocking it to make her feel better. Masaba sighs at her mother’s multiple phone calls and doesn’t answer them.

Masaba posts a happy picture with Vinay on Instagram to shut up the gossip and fake news going around about them.

At home Neena and her friend (?) Mohini search in newspapers to find the blind item about Masaba.

Masaba and Vinay go together for the Flair Magazine Awards. They pose for the paparazzi and also address questions about their divorce, denying any trouble in their marriage.

She meets Micky, the head of Flair Magazine at the awards and they exchange pleasantries. Micky seems a bit pretentious. She and Micky have known each other since childhood.

She also sees Dhairya Rana and goes up to greet him. He is the lead investor in her company, House of Masaba. Their conversation becomes awkward as she asks him about his ex-wife. She totally embarrasses herself in front of Dhairya. I never thought I’d say this, but I’m starting to find Masaba relatable.

The award function starts. Masaba gets a prestigious award. In her speech, she thanks her crew, her mother and her husband.

While going back, the reality of Masaba and Vinay’s relationship comes to the fore. It turns out, they are indeed heading for a divorce. I didn’t see this coming. All this time, they were pretending to be happily married but Vinay has already moved out of their home. Masaba hasn’t told anyone about their split as she needs time to process the situation. In the car, Masaba and Vinay quarrel over this issue. They reach a conclusion that it would be better if Masaba puts a post on Instagram announcing her separation from Vinay. Vinay changes cars mid-way and they both drive away from each other.

Masaba reaches home - her and Vinay’s house. She feels upset and alone there. Next, we see her walking down the road. She rings the bell of her mother’s house and finds comfort in her arms.

The first episode of Masaba Masaba isn’t as bad as I expected it to be. All the characters are shown as human beings and not celebrities which makes the show relatable. We get to see the unhappy side of the happy faces that showbiz projects.
