Made in Heaven Season 1 Episode 9: The Great Escape- Recap
Destinies are definitely made in heaven. But can Tara and Karan rewrite theirs?
The final episode of Made in Heaven: The Great Escape revolves around the Yadavs’ daughter’s wedding and her great escape from the wedding . This marriage is a mere stamp on the alliance between the Yadav party and Vishal Singh (Anjum Sharma), the groom. The ninth episode opens where Tara’s mother-in-law suggests that she get something new on the occasion of Tara and Adil’s wedding anniversary. Her mother-in-law knows about Adil’s affair and suggests that she should forget about it and compromise. Nutan Yadav (Rasika Dugal), the bride enters the scene to greet the guests and appears intoxicated. Tara, Karan and Kabir grow suspicious looking at the Yadavs jitter while talking to the media.
Karan is invited to a talk show where he shares his journey from hiding his sexuality to challenging Section 377. Some right wing goons enter the premises. They innocuously sit in between the audience. Later they release a video warning Karan of serious consequences if he continues to talk about homosexuality in public spaces.
Kabir invites Jaspreet to his roommate’s birthday party. She dresses up nicely for the party but when she sees Kabir kissing his roommate, she is disheartened and leaves the party immediately. Karan gets a text from Nawab, he asks Karan if they can meet somewhere. While Karan toggles between saying yes or no to Nawab, we are taken to a flashback. This flashback, completes the missing piece of Karan’s guilt. Back in school when Karan declined having any relationship with Nawab , their classmates started abusing Nawab. After this scene I couldn’t stop my tears. Soon, Nawab leaves the school. Back in school, Karan wasn’t confident about his sexuality. But look at him now, becoming an advocate for LGBT rights and filing the PIL.
Nutan’s wedding preparations have begun. She visits a shop to choose outfits for the wedding functions. She picks up a few outfits and heads to the trial room. Karan’s phone is missing and as Nutan comes back, the shopkeeper tells the Made in Heaven team that Nutan didn’t try the outfit. Beneath that outfit, Karan finds his phone. He finds an unknown number dialled in his call history, he dials at that number and the receiver cuts the call immediately. Meanwhile, Kabir tries to approach Nutan through her niece, he sends a letter saying that he’ll help Nutan. Kabir starts recording the groom and what he has to say about Nutan. Vishal is clearly marrying Nutan for the alliance and knows nothing about Nutan…so he blabbers like a second-grade student reading an essay.
In another flashback, after the CCTV incident Natasha broke her engagement with Adil. Faiza is getting engaged to Bilal. Looking at them Tara feels guilty of taking advantage of Adil. She expresses her guilt indirectly saying she feels sorry that Natasha broke up with him. Adil yet again falls for Tara’s innocence and proposes marriage to her.
At Nutan’s wedding, Kabir’s little informant brings back Nutan’s message. The message says, “Call John” along with his mobile number. The Made in Heaven team meets John, and gets to know that he is Nutan’s boyfriend. Her family is forcing her to marry Vishal and won’t let John marry her because he is a Christian and “just an engineer”. They are keeping Nutan drugged so she is unable to resist. John reveals that the Yadav family killed Nutan’s elder sister’s boyfriend and as a result her elder sister committed suicide. He is worried that Nutan might do the same herself.
At the Yadav residence, Kabir warns Nutan to not eat/ drink anything as the food might have been drugged. Jaspreet engages Nutan’s mother in some other work to divert her attention from Nutan. In between the photoshoot he steals a moment and tells Nutan to be ready tonight. She is a bit hopeful about her future with John. This hope has finally brightened her up. Or maybe it’s the lack of drugs in her system now? Either way, qawwali night begins and she gets ready for the function. Meanwhile, Kabir and Jaspreet decorate the church ahead of Nutan and John’s wedding! Now that she is hopeful, Nutan tries to mingle with her family and Vishal and insists that he drop her till her room. A big group of hijras surround the couple and that’s when the Made in Heaven team sneak Nutan out of the group. Next morning, she marries John and calls the media, to inform the press about her wedding. She adds that if anything happens to the couple, Nutan’s father should be held responsible.
After this huge success, our protagonists return back to their personal lives. Karan meets Nawab (Vikrant Massey) and apologizes to Nawab for what he did in the past. Nawab is gracious in accepting his apology. Later, they share an intimate moment with each other. Love has survived these years of humiliation and guilt. Tara on the other hand, covers herself with all the jewels she has, for soon she’ll be letting all this shimmer go away forever and for good. It’s Adil and Tara’s wedding anniversary and he is constantly getting calls from Faiza. Tara cannot handle it anymore and confronts Adil. Amidst argument, Tara finally confesses of her sins. She was the one who had spread that CCTV recording, she not only benefited from the situation but she sowed the seeds to this whole situation.
Karan and Tara leave their respective places shattered and broken by guilt and in search of hope. They both reach Made in Heaven’s office. The rightist goons that warned Karan, have destroyed their office. Now they have to start from scratch, Tara however has taken all her jewellery while leaving Adil’s house. So perhaps selling that will be their “next round of funding”.
The final episode of Made in Heaven has a lot of stories and flashbacks quenching our thirst for knowing more about the protagonists' past lives. The end of the episode left me with satisfaction that the central characters have finally chosen the right path. I am already waiting for the second season of Made in Heaven. There are a lot of questions left unanswered: How will they rebuild Made in Heaven now that they have freed themselves? What will happen to Adil and Tara? Will Karan succeed with his PIL? Whatever happens, we’ll leave it to the wonderful directors and writers of Made in Heaven.
