Made in Heaven Season 1 Episode 6: Something Old, Something New- Recap

The sixth episode of Made in Heaven - Something Old, Something New - opens with Karan in jail. Tara rushes to bail him out after getting a call from Mitali, the landlord’s daughter. Mitali tries to explain to her mother that being homosexual is not a crime and that Karan shouldn’t be put behind the bars. Mitali is taken aback when she gets to know that it was her parents who filed the complaint against Karan.

Tara reaches the police station and requests the policeman to release Karan but it doesn't help. Adil’s lawyer Meera, arranges papers for a lawyer-client meeting as an excuse to meet Karan in private. Meera says that it won’t be easy to bail out Karan because homosexuality is a non-bailable offence under Section 377. Faiza is in her therapy sessions and seems worried because Tara has not been picking up her calls since the accident. The therapist suggests that Faiza should give her some time. Faiza feels really guilty of deceiving her best friend.

Jaspreet comes to the Made in Heaven office looking for Tara. And oh, here comes the wedding part of the episode. Amidst all the chaos, I absolutely forgot about team Made in Heaven’s main job. The bride Gitanjali (Preetika Chawla) has doting parents who are in complete awe of their son-in-law Nikhil Swarup (Tanmay Dhanania). Soon after, Gitanjali’s parents talk about her adoption and how blessed they are to have her as their child.   While going back home, Jaspreet talks to Kabir about how guilty she feels for breaking Made in Heaven’s code of conduct.

Jaspreet unknowingly leaves her phone in Kabir’s car. On finding it, Kabir reaches Jaspreet's  home to return it. He is surprised to see her tiny middle-class house. He decides to be more considerate towards Jaspreet.

Tara, Adil, and Meera meet the magistrate at his residence to seek help in Karan’s case. It’s noteworthy how easily Tara forgets about Adil’s affair when it comes to seeking help from him. After getting the required money, the magistrate quickly signs the required papers. However Karan has to wait for two more days to get out of the jail. The abusive police in charge forces himself on Karan and beats him after Karan refuses to have sex with him.

The pundit is comparing the kundlis of Nikhil and Gitanjali, and says that Gitanjali is manglik. She needs to get married to a tree so that all the bad luck gets transferred to the tree instead of Nikhil. On the surface it seems like it is considered as a mere formality by both the families. But the groom’s family is a tad bit serious about it. Meanwhile, the news about Karan getting arrested is out. Meera is very sure that it’s the police who released the information to the press. Tara along with Meera rushes to get Karan out of the jail. After getting his wounds treated, Karan goes back to his parents’ home. It’s time for the darkest revelation and the answer to why Karan keeps remembering his first boyfriend.

In flashback, Karan is at his home with his first boyfriend Nawab (Vikrant Massey) in the shower. Karan’s mother knocks on the bathroom door, Karan and Nawab get frightened. Karan opens the door and his mother loses her temper at the sight of both of them together. She throws Nawab out of their home. Later, Karan’s mother thrashes him with a cricket bat for making love to a boy. This was truly heartbreaking. So far, the show made us believe that his mother really loves her son. But she is the one who is most cruel to him when he’s trying to figure out who he is.
Back to the present day, reporters try to storm inside Karan’s home and his mother calls him ‘beemar’ for being gay. Amazingly, Karan’s father backs him strongly in front of the press. Later Karan feels guilty for not trusting his father all his life. He blurts out all that happened in the past and how his mother thrashed him for being gay. His father is appalled.

The Swarups want to dissolve their contract with Made in Heaven, because Karan’s arrest under Section 377 might ruin their image in society. However, Tara makes them understand that if the contract is dissolved so will their family’s progressive image for forcing Gitanjali to marry a tree. Woah boss lady! I love Tara’s ability to cut through other people’s bullshit. They demand Karan’s absence from the wedding and Tara assures them of the same but also asks that he gets paid in full.

Mitali confronts her father for spying on Karan. Adil visits a doctor to check his sperm count and it turns out that he has low sperm motility. He is upset and questions his virility. Tara suggests that he take some natural supplements. Mitali rushes down to hand the house key to Karan. The Guptas warn him and ask him to leave the house immediately but Karan refuses. He has done nothing wrong and he feels he needs to stand by his morals. Gitanjali is all set to marry a tree when the groom arrives. The groom freaks out when he hears about this marry-the-tree-first ceremony. Gitanjali is completely fine with the ceremony because she doesn’t want to take any risks but Nikhil stands against it. After some conversation, they both decide to skip the ceremony.

While Adil’s in a meeting, a peon comes in and mixes the doctor’s suggested supplement in his tea. This scene highlights the problems in Tara’s and Adil’s marriage because neither is able to comprehend what the other is feeling. Adil goes to Faiza’s house. In flashback, Tara and Adil aren’t married yet and they’re attending a dinner party with Adil’s friends. While his friends talk about Natasha, Tara feels ignored. Faiza comes to Tara’s rescue and backs her saying that Tara is the best partner Adil could ever get. I want to say “Cheers to this sisterhood!” but things aren’t right in our world today.

In that world, Faiza is talking to her therapist about how much Tara has changed since she married Adil. Faiza describes Tara as someone who used to be a simple and sweet girl. She feels sorry for being a shitty friend to Tara. Meanwhile, Tara and Karan meet Meera for filing a lawsuit against his landlord’s family. The lawyer questions him about the welds on his body, and Karan refuses to talk about them. Later, Karan breaks down in front of Tara. He’s tired of answering questions and wants some peace in his life. Both of them visit Jauhari, the local lender, to waive off this month’s loan but instead, Jauhari has a different plan. He asks them to make him a partner of Made in Heaven with 10 percent equity and then he’ll waive off the entire loan. Tara immediately agrees to the deal.

Karan heads towards his home and meets Mr. Gupta at the gate. Mr. Gupta apologizes to him for breaching his privacy and applauds Karan for being confident about his identity, while many live their lives hiding their identity from this judgemental society. Mr. Gupta is homosexual (or maybe bisexual) but has not been able to gather the courage to come out. Tara receives a resignation letter from Shibani who has left Made in Heaven for Harmony. Jaspreet meets Karan and apologizes for her mistake. Earlier Gitanjali was convinced by her groom’s rationale of skipping the ceremony but now she marries the tree behind his back. Anguished Tara heads towards Faiza’s home and destroys everything.

Wow! This episode was so much livelier and engaging than the previous one. There were some really interesting twists and revelations from the past. Though the episode didn’t have a big storyline for the bride and groom, it was more about growth of personal storylines and focused on personal relationships between the main characters of the series. It'd be interesting to see how Tara and Faiza’s relationship progresses.

Episode Rating: 4.5/5
