Little Things: Season 3 Episode 7 Recap

Are Dhruv and Kavya engaged? That was the only question in mind going into this episode.
We don’t find out immediately. Instead, this episode takes us down the memory lane with Dhruv and Kavya. That’s why it’s titled “The Sum of Our Past.” I really like the title because it reminds us that people are a product of their past choices.
We follow Dhruv and Kavya’s childhood separately.
As an eight year old boy, Dhruv attended his brother’s wedding. He vividly recalls the different ceremonies, the parties, and the time he said he would marry his mother. Those were the simpler days. It only got more complicated after that. He thinks about the time he had a crush on his senior at school and how she was always happy to help Dhruv.
Then comes the most heartbreaking memory. The time Dhruv and his college friends were on a trekking trip and his girlfriend, Divya, broke up with him because she didn’t feel like herself around Dhruv.
The sum of Dhruv’s past made him into the self-conscious person he is today. In fact, after he met Kavya at the movie theatre for the first time, he was mentally prepared to change the aspects of himself that Kavya might find objectionable. “If you want me to change something na, bol diya kar.” He tells her at one of their early dates at the pizzeria. To which Kavya responds with “kyu? What is wrong with what we have now?”
That was probably the moment Dhruv started feeling comfortable with Kavya.
For Kavya, the journey was a little different. She grew up talking to the young “didi” who lived in the house next door. Her neighbor talked about being independent and chasing one’s own happiness. She was a bachelorette, and therefore prone to judgement from the “local aunties.” But she didn’t mind. She loved living life on her own terms and enjoyed living with Kaaju (remember him? The dog Kavya loves so much!)
A few years later, after finishing college, Kavya decides to move to Mumbai. Her boyfriend Vivek was not happy about that decision. He wanted her to stay with him so they could get married and run the family business together. Kavya begged and pleaded with him to reconsider. But when he forced her to make a choice, Kavya chose her independence. She decided then that she wants to pursue MBA in Mumbai.
Back in the present day, the ring has created a turmoil for both Dhruv, and Kavya. She is angry because of the lack of warning. This wasn’t a part of their plan. Not yet. And Dhruv tells her it was an instinct. He wasn’t proposing to her. He didn’t think at all and just popped the ring out because everyone in Delhi had made such a big deal about it.
The answer is no, they’re not getting married. Not for now. But is their relationship strong enough to survive another complication? Another fight?
We’ll find out soon, hopefully.
This episode was a 4/5 for me.
Little Things is now streaming on Netflix.
