Little Things: Season 2 Episode 1 Recap

Little Things starts the new season on a high note.

Little Things: Season 2 Episode 1 Recap

Little Things returned to screens across the nation with a wonderful and enriching plot line.

Dhruv’s childhood friend—portrayed wonderfully by Vikram Kochhar—comes to visit Dhruv and Kavya in Mumbai and brings him Delhi’s famous “Milk Cake,” which is also the title of this episode.

This is the second time the viewers get a glimpse of Dhruv‘s life in Delhi. In the previous season, we saw his friend Karan for a short while, but this time, taking Dhruv’s friend around town is the central plot of the episode.

After a quirky chat about the old days, Dhruv helps his friend settle in for the night.

In the morning, Kavya and Dhruv plan the day and decide where they would take him for dinner since he’s only in the city for a brief amount of time.

After settling for the fancy restaurant that Kavya chooses, everyone leaves for work and promises to see each other at dinner.

But once again, Kavya is late for the dinner. Dhruv and his friend wait for over half an hour for her to arrive and then finally place their order.

This is a recurring point in Dhruv and Kavya’s story, her late arrival to the restaurant is a great way of connecting the events of this season to that of the past.

At dinner, Kavya finds out about embarrassing stories about Dhruv’s past and things seem to be going smoothly until Dhruv’s friend casually makes a homophobic remark and claims that he doesn’t feel comfortable renting his family property in Delhi to gay couples. He further adds that lesbian couples are not as much of a problem for him.

Dhruv, who is visibly upset upon hearing this, tries to tell his friend that he shouldn’t hold such primitive notions of sexuality.

The subject is quickly brushed off, but when Kavya offers to pay for dinner, Dhruv notices that his friend is visibly uncomfortable about the situation because he believes “women shouldn’t have to pay.”

At this point, the two get into an argument which turns ugly very quickly and Kavya tries to take Dhruv home before things escalate any further.

Later at home, Dhruv confides in Kavya and tells her that he would not be friends with the guy if they hadn’t known each other since school.

Interestingly enough, this scene is shot in a way that Kavya becomes the focus of the lens, instead of Dhruv.

We often see characters who are saying the dialogue in front of the camera, but here, Dhruv’s words are simply in the background of Kavya’s chores.

I believe this was a very smart nod to the fact that Kavya believes that what Dhruv is saying about him and his friend may be true for the couple as well.

In the back of her mind, she believes that maybe the two wouldn’t be dating if they had met under present circumstances either.

While they don’t explore this subplot in this episode, it is a good setup for coming episodes to dive into.

Dhruv notices Kavya’s reluctance when it comes to complaining about his childhood friend. He tells her to sit with him and talk about it.

Kavya finally takes a pause and builds the courage to tell Dhruv that he shouldn’t argue with his friend.

She goes on to tell him that it’s important to keep in touch with old friends because a lot of times in life people feel confused and during those moments “you’ll be happy to know that few things are the same.”

Dhruv realises that he failed to keep in touch with his friends in Delhi and doesn’t always know what is going on in their lives.

He mulls over what Kavya said to him, while she fixes the situation for him and brings his friend back to their place.

The two talk to each other all night and quickly fall in their old pattern of taking a stroll down memory lane and joking with each other.

The episode closes with Dhruv bidding farewell to his friend with a promise to keep in touch while Kavya smiles and heads out for work.

For this emotion filled and character driven comeback, the episode Milk Cake gets a rating of 4/5.

Little Things is now streaming on Netflix.
