Kota Factory Season 1 Review

The show begins with Vaibhav, the protagonist, trying to get admission in Maheshwari classes, the best coaching institute in Kota. He gets rejected and goes to Prodigy, another institute in Kota that accepts him but transfers him in an A10 batch, a very low competition class. At Prodigy he meets a teacher called Jeetu who helps him out both in studies and his personal life.

In the following episodes we see Jeetu helping Vaibhav adjust to the Kota life and even giving  him life advice when he struggles in some subjects. Jeetu proves to be a teacher who is really dramatic and is not afraid to bend the rules. Vaibhav along with the help of friends slowly turns into a dedicated student.

In the final episode we see Vaibhav making some important decisions regarding his academic career.

Kota Factory is a jewel of a web series in the education genre. The direction and scripting is impeccable. Also the dialogues are written with teenage lingo in mind.

The creator of the show and most of the creative team involved in the production have actually themselves studied in Kota. This is why the show is well-researched and explores themes and situations that the writers themselves have struggled with.

The show is made in black-white and that further adds to the mood of melancholy that shadows many episodes. It perfectly captures the colorless life of the students who are made to study like machines.

The cast chosen fits comfortably in their characters. Mayur More shines with his portrayal of Vaibhav and is a likable protagonist. Jitendra Kumar as Jeetu wins hearts and everyone dreams of having a teacher like him.

The supporting cast is interesting with their unique personalities. Meena comes from a poor background but his humility and loyalty to his friends breaks all barriers. Uday and Shivangi are a fun duo. Their constant bickering acts as comic relief. Uday is initially written as an immature character who only thinks about skipping classes and having fun but as the show progresses he helps Vaibhav make some very logical decisions. Shivangi, his girlfriend, is extroverted, confident and strong headed. Uday is very much intimidated by her.

Vaibhav also develops a  love interest. I personally did not find their relationship mature or interesting.

Topics chosen for each episode are very relatable. The problems students have with mess food and concentrating for long periods of time for studying was well portrayed. Failure and inability to score in particular subjects and what part teachers should play in helping students, not lose hope, along with themes of love at a young age and friendships.

The show also captures the harsh reality of coaching institutes and how they are more focused on their rankings and students who fail to keep up are not helped or provided extra attention. Teacher poaching and the conversion of educational institutes into business is very evident.

Overall, the series is well crafted and has resonated with students all over the country. Season 2 is highly anticipated and I hope it carries the show to the same heights.

Show Rating - 5/5
