Kota Factory Season 1 Episode 3 Recap: Optimization

The episode begins with Vaibhav getting excited for his inorganic chemistry class. He discusses with Meena how easy the last chemistry test questions were and both of them optimistically proclaim to get most of their answers correct.

While they are leaving for their class, the PG owner accuses Vaibhav of leaving the fan in his room switched on. Vaibhav engages in a verbal spat with her and the owner threatens to increase the rent.

During inorganic chemistry class, Vaibhav and Meena are shocked to find almost all of their answers wrong. Vaibhav questions his teacher, Mr. Batla about answers that he had marked incorrectly. Batla tells Vaibhav that he had forgotten the exception rules in chemistry which is why he scored so low.

Vaibhav takes Meena outside to treat him since he has lost the bet and scored one mark less than him. Here they meet a student of A6 who shares his chocolate with Meena. The student tells them that he had earned the sweet by easily solving a ‘chocolate problem’. A chocolate problem is a very difficult question only given to students of A1 batch. Vaibhav and Meena are shocked. They come to the conclusion that they were falling behind in chemistry due to their teacher’s incompetence.

Vaibhav tries convincing Meena to rate Mr. Batla poorly in the feedback forms. Meena refuses and says rating a guru poorly was against his ethics. Vaibhav throws him off with a personal attack and tells him that his low grades in inorganic chemistry are going to be the reason why he will never be an IITian. Meena feels hurt but then agrees to do what Vaibhav wants. Vaibhav then convinces his whole class to provide Mr. Batla with negative feedbacks. In the end, his efforts lead to Mr. Batla being removed from the faculty.

In the next class, we meet the new inorganic chemistry teacher, Mr. Awasthi. He turns out to be a total nightmare. He screams at students when they ask him questions, doesn’t solve their doubts and even makes the topper of the class, Meennal cry by calling her an ass. All eyes are on Vaibhav now, he is the reason why this monstrous teacher is assigned to their batch

Vaibhav and Meena immediately run to Deepak Sir, the headmaster. Vaibhav begs him to assign their batch a new teacher but he refuses. Vaibhav then shrewdly mentions that Mr. Awasthi made Meenal cry. Deepak is now all ears. He calls Meenal to his office and asks her about the new teacher. She sobs and tells him that she didn’t quite like him. On Vaibhav’s encouragement she further informs him that she wants A6 Batch’s teacher. Deepak agrees to fulfill her demand.

Now, we see a snippet of the new teacher, Parminder. He is lively, comical and has a natural flair for teaching. He makes interesting stories to explain difficult topics. He even sings in class! Vaibhav and his whole class are extremely delighted.

Cut to the next test class, Vaibhav is shocked when most of his inorganic chemistry answers are wrong again. He starts to scream and loses his temper in class. Parminder tells Vaibhav he had forgotten the exception rules in chemistry again.

By now, Vaibhav has a full blown nervous breakdown. He goes on a lengthy tirade about how much he hates this subject. Meena tries to calm him but it doesn’t work. Everywhere Vaibhav goes, his diatribe about inorganic chemistry continues.

Finally Meena takes him to Jeetu. Jeetu tells Vaibhav that instead of wasting his time on this subject Vaibhav should move on and study topics in which he was good at. Vaibhav is shocked and tells him that if he leaves this topic, he won’t score well enough to get into IIT. Jeetu tells him that this topic only had 11% weightage and he needed to score only 40% in JEE MAINS to get the top 5 IITs. Both Vaibhav and Meena, in disbelief, ask him if he is joking. Jeetu tells them that he himself never studied Inorganic Chemistry. As Jeetu is leaving, Meena asks him about the speech he gave about confronting problems and not giving up and how this new advice totally contradicts his last stance. Jeetu smiles and tells them that this situation is an exception.

And with the end of another episode, Kota Factory proves that this journey about the lives of Kota students is only going to get better. Mayur More shines with his portrayal of Vaibhav and is a likable protagonist. The supporting cast is interesting with their unique personalities. There are many comical moments all along the episode to lift the somber mood of the show.
