Joji: Hit it or Miss it

Joji is a newly released Malayalam film which has already become a topic of conversation amongst cinephiles. Directed by Dileesh Pothan, Joji is inspired by Shakespeare's Macbeth. It is the third Indian adaptation of that play after Maqbool and Veeram. Joji is set in the contemporary world. The film is available on Amazon Prime. The filming was done during the pandemic, so it shows the state of COVID-19. Therefore, we can see people wearing masks and even quarantining.

Shot in Kottayam, Kerala, Joji is the story of a family consisting of a father and his three sons- Jaison, Jomon and Joji. With them also lives Jaison's wife and Jomon's son. The father, Kuttapan is a wealthy plantation owner and an oppressive and dominant father. Kuttapan is a fit man but faces a major heart attack one day. From here, the intertwined lives of the three siblings untangle. The film portrays differences in a family. It also depicts distinct outlooks and coping mechanisms of different people. Members of the same family may look differently at each other but at the end of the day they are a family living under the same roof. The film strongly represents the involvement of society and its norms in our lives. Society can be very interfering when it comes to following our age old traditions and it never allows us to do anything against our traditions, or else we can be looked down upon by people of our community. Joji's exasperation over these matters and also the feeling of not being good enough, which he was forced to believe because of his father's incessant humiliation led him to roads he never intended to walk. Actor Fahadh Faasil plays the role of Joji. His acting and expressing of emotions like frustration and regret in the film is remarkable.

The film is produced by Bhavana Studios and Working Class Hero, and the cinematography by Shyju Khalid gives the audience a chance to explore the natural beauty of Kerala.

According to film critics, Joji is a debate-worthy, must watch film. So, audiences who are interested in dark films should go for it on a relaxed weekend with a bowl of popcorn.
