Grahan Season 1 Episode 8 Recap: Ek Deewana Tha

Finally comes the last episode of Hotstar Specials’ Grahan. Vikas is in the hospital after he was shot in the previous episode while trying to save Amrita.

Next, we see Gursevak’s court appearance. All the major characters of the show are present in the court. The judge recites a list of claims against Gursevak a.k.a. Rishi Ranjan. Gursevak accepts responsibility for all of them without saying a word in protest. However, his lawyer brings in an undeclared witness to court. The witness is none other than Manu who comes with her husband. Manu and Rishi cry when they see each other.

Manu tells the court her side of the story about the day of the riots in Bokaro in 1984. Rishi came to Chabbras’ house on that day after Chunnu incited the mob to riot. The plan was to start the killings in the dusk. Rishi told Mr. Chabbra about the threat to their safety and suggested he migrate somewhere else with his family. However, Chabbra didn’t want to leave his home. Rishi made the Chabbra family pack their valuable things and shifted them to his room upstairs. He instructed them not to open the door for anyone except him. After a while, Jhandu came knocking on Rishi’s door. Recognising Jhandu’s voice, Manu opened the door because she trusted him. Jhandu dragged her parents outside the room and locked it. He forced himself on Manu and raped her.

After the violent riots when Rishi came home to Manu and her family, he found Manu sitting numbly in one corner with her clothes tattered. He bumped into Jhandu and understood everything that happened. Enraged, he hit Jhandu multiple times and killed him.

The next morning, Manu and her family left Bokaro.

Manu’s story finishes. Back in the courtroom, she urges Rishi to share his side of the story.

Now starts Rishi’s emotional monologue. When Chunnu incited the mob and circulated a list of Sikh families in the neighbourhood, Rishi volunteered to start the riots from the Chabbra house. Rishi told Jhandu that he will save Manu and his family. At dusk, the rioters took weapons from a white Ambassador managed by Suraj. Rishi reached the Chabbra house with other rioters and they set fire to it. The rioters also looted the house. Rishi prevented the rioters from going upstairs, thus saving Manu and his family. Next, Rishi directed the mob to loot houses and set cars on fire so that the loss of life was minimal. During this time, Jhandu and Rishi had a disagreement and Jhandu parted ways with Rishi.

A year after the deadly riots, Rishi went searching for Manu in Moga, Punjab. She had given birth to Jhandu’s baby but she couldn’t accept the child because it reminded her of her traumatic memories. Rishi decided to take the child with him since Manu was getting married. The child is none other than Amrita.

Back to the present, Amrita leaves the courtroom after learning the truth about her parents. Manu goes after her and makes her realise that whatever Amrita is today, it is because of Rishi. The court’s decision is pending. The police take Gursevak back to the police station. In an emotional moment, Amrita hugs him and says that she is proud of him.

In a press conference, Kedaar talks about the Hindnagar riots being prevented and rioters arrested. He also highlights the uncovering of the opposition’s involvement in the Bokaro riots.

In Kedaar’s conversation with his father, we learn that Kedaar is the one who got Suraj killed.

Amrita reaches Sanjay’s home to arrest him. Sanjay tells Amrita that the truth has shades of grey in it. He makes her wonder how a small union leader like him was able to lead a large-scale riot in Bokaro and from where he got the white Ambassador full of weapons.

As Sanjay hints at another higher authority’s involvement, we’re taken back to the past. A young Kedaar calls Chunnu (Sanjay) and tells him that this is the time for him to show his leadership if Chunnu wants a Vidhan Sabha ticket.

In the present, Amrita arrests Sanjay while he tells her to find out the complete truth.

Hotstar Specials’ Grahan ends with an unpredictable twist. However, some angles like Gursevak’s acquittal, Kedaar’s involvement in the Bokaro riots and the mysterious death of Guru still remain unexplored. Although these are not cliffhangers, there could be a possibility of a second season being made to elaborate on these elements along with a fresh story.
