Grahan Season 1 Episode 5 Recap: Pehchaan
In this episode of Grahan, Amrita meets her mother. The officers take a rioter into custody.

The fourth episode of Hotstar Specials’ Grahan opens in Patna in 1996. We see Amrita as a child with her father, Gursevak. A young Amrita expresses sadness about not having her mother with her.
The scene shifts to the present day in Bokaro at Saini’s school. Pragya i.e., Amrita’s mother runs the school with Saini. Amrita visits her there and asks her about her past. Pragya shows Amrita some photographs of her childhood with Gursevak and Pragya. Pragya tells her that she didn’t want to live with Amrita’s father anymore so she came back to Bokaro. This upsets Amrita and she asks her mother why Amrita was told that her mother was dead. However, Pragya doesn’t answer her questions and starts crying.
Next, Amrita and the team reach Ramakant Thakur’s house. Ramakant was the one who drove Saini to his shop on the fateful night of 1984. Ramakant names some rioters like Rishi, Jhandu, Raghav and Guru. He specifically talks about Rishi who set fire to Saini’s car outside his shop and Saini couldn’t reach home in time to save his family. Amrita learns that Rishi was Chunnu’s right-hand man. Rishi killed the man who gave him a place to stay. Ramakant has strong animosity for Rishi. Amrita decides to show him the picture of the rioter. To her surprise, Ramakant immediately recognises the rioter (and her father) to be Rishi. Amrita asks him if he ever knew any Gursevak to which Ramakant replies in the negative.
Elsewhere, Vikas visits a bank employee’s house and learns that two men came to the bank to withdraw money from Chunnu’s account. One of them was Rishi who signed the cheque. Vikas shows him the photo of the rioter and the bank employee recognises him as Rishi.
A confused Amrita meets her mother to learn about her father’s dark past. However, Pragya doesn’t tell her much except that Gursevak was Rishi and he loved Manu. Manu lives in Canada now and Rishi did what he did for his love. After Amrita leaves, Pragya calls Gursevak and tells her about Amrita’s confusion. Gursevak doesn’t want the truth to come out and says that he will talk to Amrita himself.
In the past, we’re shown a boy’s family at Manu’s house visiting for the purpose of an arranged marriage. The boy lives in Canada and hence, Manu will go to Canada after marriage. She is distressed.
Pragya suggests that Manu and Rishi run away together under the cover of Chhath Puja, a holiday that is taking place in two days.
In the present day, Amrita and Vikas visit the colony where the orphans and widows of the victims of the 1984 riots live. A girl recalls her parents being brutally beaten to death. A police officer came to save them but he was called back by his superior. The girl tells them that Guru was the rioter who killed her parents. Now, Guru serves in a Gurudwara nearby.
Meanwhile, Santosh Jaiswal’s phone records show that he received repeated calls from Usman Alam before his death. The police try to find Usman.
Amrita and Vikas reach the Gurudwara and meet Guru. Guru regrets his actions. He tells the officers that Chunnu had put a price on the lives of Sikhs in Bokaro. The more Sikhs that a rioter killed, the greater would be his compensation and Guru was very poor at that time. However, Guru’s mind hasn’t been at peace since then. He agrees to give a statement in court. The officers take Guru in their custody to record his statement the next day. Amrita and Vikas learn that an officer called Gautam Patidar was the one who called the other officer back from helping the Sikhs.
Amrita gives the DIG an update about the arrest of a rioter, Guru, who is willing to give a statement against Sanjay Singh.
Back at their accommodation, Amrita and Vikas sit together. Vikas is disturbed after learning about the violence of the riots. He also lost his family in his childhood to caste-driven riots and can relate to the misery of the survivors.
While Amrita is away, Vikas spots Amrita’s childhood photos that Pragya gave her earlier in the day. He looks at Amrita’s father’s photo and then compares it with the rioter Rishi’s photo and finds them to be of the same person. Suddenly, there is a commotion outside their accommodation. Amrita and Vikas rush outside to find that Guru has been killed.
This episode of Grahan ends on a cliff-hanger again. Someone doesn’t want the truth to come out. I strongly feel that the DIG is involved with Sanjay Singh in covering his actions. The next episode will uncover more secrets and political connections.
