Chhalaang Movie Review

Hansal Mehta’s Chhalaang is a comedy version of Nitesh Tiwari’s Dangal. Unlike Dangal, Chhalaang doesn’t spend much time exploring the emotional aspects of the characters. Instead, it touches upon a delicate moment, kisses it with a joke, and moves ahead elegantly. There is smart humor weaved in serious situations, and the jokes and punchlines are on point, thanks to the brilliant supporting cast.

The protagonist of Mehta’s story, Montu (Rajkumar Rao) is a lazy Physical Education teacher in the school he graduated from. He is not interested in doing his duties as a teacher but his ego takes a hit when Singh (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) threatens to snatch away the former’s job and the love of his life, Neelu (Nushrat Barucha).

The dialogues and characters look genuine and real. There isn’t any loophole there. Every action seems driven and convincing of its character. Mehta has brilliantly given his characters a reason to love, rebel, laugh, shout, cry, or fight. In a very subtle manner, Mehta convinces the audience that he is the best.

The picture fills your screen with many colors. The costumes, background, and setting are vibrant enough to make you wonder which, if any, color has not been used in the film. Along with the visual vibrancy, Mehta has aced the emotional vibrancy of characters when they talk about gender equality in their own casual and witty manner.

Chhalaang neither establishes itself as a love story nor as a story of struggle like Dangal. It falls somewhere in between the two with a hint of Hera Pheri in it. Perhaps, that is the beauty of the film- it offers you a story with a witty message. The message won’t touch you or make you cry but it’s enough to entertain you on an overworked evening without rolling your eyes.
