Captain Karan and his Flight of Death
A series of unfortunate events leads to Captain Karan’s wish of a simple death turn into a disaster. The following article contains spoilers.
Captain Karan Sachdeva, pilot of Skyline 502 who was an ex-wing commander at the IAF wants to die. But not in the ordinary way. He wants to die in the air like fighter jet pilots do.
Karan plans to drink his coffee laced with poison but due to a confusion his co-pilot and the stand-by pilot ends up drinking it instead.
Now, there is no one to land the plane except for him. The ATC Mumbai thinks he is a terrorist and Karan’s mental stability starts to decline.
There is no one to help him in the plane or on his side. He is alone with his thoughts and his unwavering focus on committing suicide. But he is in a dilemma now. His decision to end his life will cause the death of more than 300 people.
Karan is depressed because of primarily two reasons. First, he realises that his job as a fighter pilot, which he loved, led to the death of a friend. Secondly, the death of his whole family due to a car crash has left him feeling alone. He finds no reason to live now.
In the end, to fulfill his wish of dying in the air, he takes the poison pill and then tries to land the plane. To no one’s surprise it crash lands in the sea.
One might argue that even if Karan wasn’t losing consciousness because of the poison, the landing gear failure wouldn’t have been resolved and the plane still wouldn’t have landed on the landing strip of the airport. Yes, but speaking realistically, an aircraft can land perfectly in water.
We hear Karan say, “Real pilots don't take lives but save them”, a number of times but Karan’s crash ends up killing 126 passengers on board. Something which he could have prevented.
Captain Karan is a flawed character. Instead of making a choice between dying and killing everyone or being in misery and saving his passengers , he chose to take the middle ground and try his best to save as many lives as he could.
To add to the grief, even if ATC Kiran was close to changing Karan’s mind about committing suicide, the knowledge that he was indirectly responsible for Kiran’s son’s death, must have further strengthened his resolve.
The ending of The Final Call can be changed to many other alternatives. Karan could have taken the poison after landing. His wish of dying in the air wouldn’t have been fulfilled but then his decision wouldn’t have been ironic given that the reason he quit IAF was that their actions caused innocents to die.
Captain Karan had all the odds stacked up against him. He is shown to have an antisocial personality and initially even loses the trust of his flight cabin crew. Karan’s mental stability was already way too compromised by the end of the show and this might have contributed to his ill-made decisions.
