Breathe: Season 1 Episode 4 Recap - The Audition
Breathe takes interesting turns as new characters with uncertain conclusions emerge in the story.

The episode opens with a scene from Kabir’s past life. We see Kabir and Ria leading a happy life along with their daughter Shreya - A complete opposite of what their marriage has become. We see the couple occupied in chores while Shreya goes over to her father’s cupboard and takes out his gun with amusement. She starts playing with its nozzle pointing towards her face and BOOM!
Kabir wakes up to the sound of the gunshot in his head and is having an anxiety attack and sweating profusely. We are back where we left off in the previous episode.
At the police station we see that the new ACP, Shankar Patil (Kali Prasad Mukherjee) has been appointed. By his expressions, he doesn’t seem like an easy guy to work under. His juniors will definitely need to tighten their shoelaces to save their places.
Danny visits the graveyard and talks to his wife about his last murder; her grave is his confidante for every secret that he now possesses.
The episode introduces us to a 23-year-old aspiring actress Anita Sahani. It is the same girl we saw in the opening scene of the series. She is the one next on the list. Danny registers for an audition at the casting company she works with to make it easier for him to watch her. One day, while Anita and her casting director Gavin visit a director’s set, Danny overhears that Anita is supposed to show up for an audition the day after. He manages to sneak Gavin’s phone and sends Anita a text saying that an intern will show up at her place the same night for the rehearsals of the audition. Now I see how the dots are connected. Danny is really improving his serial killer game with every move.
Later in the evening, Danny shows up on Anita’s door as a relatively young and friendly “Parthu” (The intern), leaving his cross back in his car. He hands over a script to her and asks her to prepare her lines. It is the same script we saw her reading before! Just that now we are aware of what it means. He tells her that they are supposed to record the video for Gavin’s review but since Anita is having trouble memorising her lines, Danny who is running out of time, places the script behind her phone’s camera to help her deliver her to-be suicide performance.
Apparently, the lines say that she has failed to make her name in the industry and would rather die than compromise, a story similar to hers. Anita delivers an astounding performance with the lines and makes Danny emotional (or so he says). Danny asks for her phone to make a phone call (read: fake phone call) and erases the message he sent her earlier in the day without an ounce of suspicion from her. In his friendly “Parthu” suggests a treat and Anita orders pizza which is supposed to be delivered within half an hour. Danny sets a 30-minutes timer on her watch and asks her to get ready for the next scene of the rehearsal. I am already scared for the poor girl. She doesn’t know what’s coming for her.
Danny teaches her how to tie herself up and roll the plastic over her face for the shot. What follows is the opening scene of the series: Anita suffocates herself to death while Danny watches her and then leaves. The next day, Danny confides in his wife’s grave that he sympathizes with his victims and that they keep him awake at night but Josh’s face brings back his peace.
In the police station, we see Prakash ranting about how no one gives a shit about dying farmers but the whole country wants to know what happened of the actress who committed suicide. In another scene, Prakash thanks his junior for saving up a slice of pizza for him, else someone would have gulped it down in the station (indirectly, corruption). The series has used brief sarcastic comments to address some not-so-funny issues. Meanwhile, Kabir who is busy obsessing over Rahul’s case is advised by Prakash to drink less. Perhaps, Prakash feels that Kabir’s obsession makes no sense. He says in the heck of the moment that they should also donate their organs like Rahul and Anita, and jokingly adds that if not taken care of, Kabir’s organs will become hollow and play like a mouth organ. Prakash seriously needs to crack some better jokes.
At Danny’s place, the family is having breakfast when Juliet starts talking about Anita’s suicide plus the generation’s incompetence to handle the pressure. She is criticising people’s decisions to end their life and not thinking about their families. Danny interrupts her and says, “Maa...jo bhi hota hai na, there is a very good reason for it,” with a smirk. Meanwhile, Kabir and Prakash are discussing Anita’s case when Kabir figures out that Anita is reading lines in the video and grows suspicious as a suicide note is written not read.
Aruna tells Danny about an offer she has received from The Australian Centre for Medical Science and asks him to think about their future. She is grateful that so many miracles have happened in such a short time, specifically Josh’s position on the Donor Recipient’s list to which Josh says that there are no miracles in life except the ones that we create. Aruna asks him to create one for them: to get married and move to Australia.
In the next scene, Kabir and Prakash are sitting at a restaurant. Prakash is talking to his wife on the phone and praising the sabzi she has made for him while gulping down some kebabs. Kabir sits across from him doing his usual chore, drinking when the similarities between both the murders strike him and he instructs Prakash to get him the zonal list of all organ donors of Mumbai.
While they sit at the police station going over the list, Kabir decides to get a doctor’s expert opinion about the supposed crime. At this, Prakash who is still disinterested in the case gives off a ‘what the heck’ look. They get to know that the most important factor in organ donation is that the donor and recipient’s blood group should match. Since Rahul and Anita both had a rare blood group: AB-, Kabir instructs Prakash to shortlist the AB- donors in Mumbai. At this point, Prakash doesn’t look disinterested. Perhaps, the cases have seemed to gain his suspicion too.
Danny takes out the remaining two photographs and places them upside down in front of him. He picks up one of them as his next target. At the police station, Prakash who’s writing the names of all the AB- donors on board notices something and calls Kabir to take a look at it. The music in the background intensifies as Danny, who walks with the photo in hand, sticks it on the wall and we see that the woman in the photo is Ria. At the same time, Kabir reads his wife’s name “Ria Ganguly” on the board and his face loses its colours as he realises that she could be the killer’s next target.
The episode titled “The Audition” ends on the cliffhanger. The story has begun to take some serious twists...
