Breathe leaves no stone untouched to impress viewers with its suspense ridden tale and uncertainty of events.

Breathe: Season 1 Episode 3 Recap - Safety First

The story is getting darker with every step forward. This episode takes us to the next person Danny is going to hunt. But initially, Verma needs to be taken care of. In the opening scene, we see Danny quietly walk into the hospital at night and no one notices him as the receptionist is sleeping...yes she is dozing off peacefully, and there isn’t any crowd around to suspect him. He sneaks in the ICU by changing into the hospital staff’s uniform. My pulse rate is syncing with the beats in the background...Verma might die anytime now! Danny reaches Verma’s bed, looks at him and is trying to figure out how to turn his ventilator off them...

BOOM!

A nurse appears from the adjoining section and asks Danny to work faster. She assumes him to be one of the staff members. Verma still breathes...sigh.

The next morning Danny visits his wife Margaret’s grave and tells her that he’s aware that his ways are immoral but he has no other choice to save Josh’s life. As he leaves the graveyard, I wonder who’ll be next.

A new character is introduced in the story, or to say, a new prey – a 28-year-old Techie, Rahul Pradhan. Danny stalks him day in and day out. He notices Rahul’s every action every minute. Daily, Rahul visits a tea-stall and talks to his fiancé standing near the stall, at the same spot. The camera shifts upwards from Rahul’s spot and we see some plant pots overhead which Danny eyes with a cold look. Is Danny planning to topple one of them over Rahul’s head? Oh...this is going to be a seriously difficult task for Danny.

In the next scene, we see ACP Nilesh Mohite and a Minister Pradhanji having drinks at the former’s house. They are discussing politics and money. A show cannot exist without some money scams and a powerful leader involved in the story. Kabir and Prakash enter the house and greet their superiors. Kabir goes over to Mohite and hands over a bag to him whispering, ”Malwankar wali raid ka hai”, in his ear. Looks are deceiving. This story isn’t as innocent as it appears to be. Kabir’s gaze shifts to the stack of bottles behind Mohite and he stares at them with dead eyes but controls himself. Duh...it would have been a treat to eyes if he had gulped down a few bottles in front of the Minister.

Surprisingly, we get to know that Rahul is the Minister’s son, and is supposed to get married soon. His death would heat the case and throw spark on different angles. Danny might be putting himself in too much risk with his next prey.

Kabir, whom we haven’t seen drinking lately, gets two bottles (on a dry day) in his jeep and heads to work, along with Prakash. On a side note, Prakash has been giving full Katekar (Sacred Games) vibes in every episode, I'm afraid the makers will eventually kill him.

Kabir and Prakash are an ironic combination in the series. One morning as Kabir walks up to the police van, he notices Prakash's daughter sitting in the backseat. He gets uncomfortable seeing her as she reminds him of Shreya. Kabir sits in and acts all tough but we can see that he's desperately trying to fight off those tears behind his goggles. Prakash informs him that his daughter missed her bus today and needs to be dropped to school, Kabir nods and tries not to pay too much attention to her. The chatterbox shows Kabir a drawing she made of her family and Kabir is looking at the happy picture reminded of his 'once upon a time' moment. Sadh has given no opportunity to disappoint his viewers with his terrific characterization.

Meanwhile, Danny stands in front of a garment store and stares at the dummy with a tilted head. It strikes him that he can use a dummy for the rehearsals of Rahul's murder. God knows how but he somehow manages to get a dummy to his base-camp and practices several throws at the dummy's head with plant pots by standing on a ladder. He breaks the dummy's head several times till he figures out the perfect amount of force and angle required to break Rahul's head.

The episode’s attention shifts towards Ria, who is heading to ACP Mohite’s farewell party with Sameer, who is unsure about going since he doesn’t know anyone over there and people will gossip about them. Ria tells him that he’ll keep her accompanied and that she doesn’t care about what people think. Surely, Kabir too will be at the party; I wonder how many bottles of alcohol he will need to gulp down on seeing Ria with someone else.

At the party, Kabir stands at his spot - the drinks table. Mohite approaches him and tries to knock some philosophy of “change being the only constant thing in life”, into him but Kabir is not even close to accepting the changes life has thrown at him with full momentum. Ria enters the scenario and Kabir’s air changes. He is jealous and drinks glass after glass of alcohol. Drunk Kabir approaches the duo and tells Ria that he’s happy for her because “paintbrushes don’t kill babies”. He blames himself for his daughter’s tragic history.

The plot switches back to Danny, lying beside his sleeping son. He remembers one of their picnics to the beach where the father-son duo played football and felt truly happy. Tears roll down as he looks at his son. Next day, Danny removes his cross before heading out. It's time for another attempt to murder. He is waiting for Rahul to show up at the tea stall. Rahul doesn't approach the tea stall and heads straight for his apartment instead. He stops before entering the building. Danny, full of confusion, is shocked by Rahul abruptly stopping in between; background music creates an eerie atmosphere and it seems like Rahul has finally noticed his stalker. He looks towards Danny's direction. Okay...so maybe this time the goat lives. But instead of Danny, he approaches the tea vendor (oh...the suspense) and informs him that he'll be travelling out of town for work for a few days. Bummer. Danny's hopes seem crushed as he worries about this sudden change in plans.

I would have expected Danny to postpone the murder for a few days but the plot seems too eager for Rahul to die. It is raining heavily in the evening and Danny steals Rahul's helmet from his bike before the latter has to go away. When Rahul notices this, he asks the watchman about it who doesn't know about the 'helmet chor'. With no option left, he heads out on his bike without the helmet. Danny, who is waiting for him in his car at a distance, smashes his bike and it goes gliding through the slippery road. Danny walks out of his car with Rahul's helmet. He locks the helmet to the bike to avoid suspicion. Injured Rahul is begging for help from Danny but the latter with his unfriendly looks apologizes and smashes his head with a brick (oooh…way out of the league for Danny).

In the next scene, Juliet knocks at the bathroom to give Danny the good news, "Josh number 3 pe aa gaya hai". Yes, Rahul died. Finally, a character died in the series. While his mother celebrates the good news, Danny is crying in the shower. The character is venting out his guilt and frustration. Danny is now a murderer.

We see Rahul's lit pyre. Danny stands among the mourners. Kabir joins them as well. While leaving, Danny expresses his condolences to Rahul's father (the minister) who has no idea that the man holding his hand is his son's murderer. People at the funeral have been talking about how Rahul should have worn the helmet instead of locking it on his bike and Danny walks away without any suspicions.

When he reaches close to his home, Shaina, one of his neighbours asks him for help in getting her drunk boyfriend, Ronnie out of the cab. While the three of them are at her place, and Ronnie unconscious with the alcohol, Shaina hits on Danny. She tells him that she wishes Ronnie was more like him: simple, loving, mature, and selfless. Danny asks her to be happy with what she has as no one knows what lies within. This twist in Madhavan's character gives off some chilly vibes. Maybe the next murder won’t be as difficult for him as this one.

Next morning at the police station, Vrushali (Rahul’s fiance) tries to convince Kabir that there is more to Rahul's case. He was very finicky about safety and the fact that he did not wear a helmet even when it was available seems unlike him. Kabir is not convinced by her statements and asks her to drink water. He then rushes to the court where Ria and her parents wait for him for the divorce hearing. The judge gives the couple 6 months to resolve their issues before the next hearing. In the courtroom, Kabir's eye lands on the helmet sitting at a table and he begins to ponder over Vrushali's statements about the case.

Kabir shares Vrushali's claims with Prakash. Prakash tells him not to pay any heed to it saying that it was nothing but an accident and the lady is simply mourning her dead lover, but Kabir doesn't seem to buy the story. He questions the watchman and the office boy Rahul last called to inquire about his helmet and feels like something is fishy. This is bad news for Danny.

This episode titled, "Safety First" was exactly what I was expecting of this series from the trailer. The show took time before it began to impress me. Hopefully, the graph wouldn't go down after this episode. In the following episodes, watching Sadh and Madhavan play the cop and criminal game will be a feast for the eyes.

Episode Rating: 4.5/5
