Breathe: Into the Shadows Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: Papa's Princess

The first episode of Breathe: Into the Shadows starts with a jagran scene. A mother and daughter are present and the daughter has a Human Anatomy book open. She has an exam in two days and so she tells her mother that she is going home to study. She walks to her home alone at night with the book in her hand and earphones in her ears. Suddenly, she sees a mysterious shadow of a man walking towards her. She is scared and treads carefully, her body tightening. The man is wearing a red chequered hoodie and seems to walk with a limp. Their paths cross each other smoothly. The girl is relieved but she is paranoid that someone is following her. She looks back but nobody's there. Where did the man go? Suddenly, the man kidnaps her, leaving her book and earphones on the road. Oh no! This is a very eerie scene. We aren’t even introduced to the character’s names before a kidnapping occurs. The audience is left completely confused as to what is happening.

After the intro, we see a 21-year-old Chandni Rawat being taken into police custody for murdering her father, uncle and aunt. In court, a lawyer defends her on grounds of her unstable mental condition as she is schizophrenic. However, to disprove this claim, the opposition lawyer gets a psychologist, Dr. Avinash Sabharwal. Cue, the dashing Abhishek Bachchan. Avinash tells the court that after having various sessions with Chandni, his final analysis is that she is not schizophrenic. The opposition lawyer further reveals that Chandni made up this act of a mental disorder to evade judicial punishment. This marks the end of the case. This scene gives us an introduction to Avinash and his psychic genius.

Avinash reaches home where his wife, Abha, is garnishing a dish. She is a professional chef who works at a restaurant. We are then introduced to the couple’s daughter, Siya, as the three of them share a sweet family moment. They sit down to eat and Avinash reads about the girl who was kidnapped in the newspaper. Her name is Gayatri and she is a medical student. It is Siya’s friend’s birthday today and Avinash drops her at the birthday party. Siya is dressed in a cute Simba costume. The party is at an open ground with a lot of swings and fun activities. All the kids have fun while Avinash sits at a nearby café to work. A strange man dressed in all black and a black hat enters the party and goes up to Siya. Cut to...a message on the parents’ WhatsApp group about the party being over. Avi reaches there to take Siya back. But…she is nowhere to be found. Avi and the hosts of the party look for her everywhere. Finally, the police are called. Abha also reaches there, panicking. The police show them the CCTV footage of the party in which the view of the cameras is blocked for some time through balloons. Siya’s Simba mask is found on the road outside.

At home, Avi and Abha make efforts to contact the kidnapper along with the police and a junior officer from the crime branch, Jaiprakash. Avi talks to a senior officer and doubts if Siya’s kidnapping could be linked to the kidnapping of the other girl. There has been no ransom call till now.

Next morning, Abha talks to the kidnappers through the media. She pleads with them to bring Siya back because she is a juvenile diabetic who has to be given 4 insulin injections every day. She assures the kidnappers that no action will be taken against them if they do so.

48 hours pass and no contact is made by the kidnappers. This worries Avi and Abha. Abha prints ‘Missing’ posters for Siya and circulates them around. Avi takes to social media asking for any information on the whereabouts of his daughter.

3 months later, Siya is still missing. Abha cries looking at her daughter’s old videos while a heartbroken Avi goes to work. Now, 4 months pass without any information about Siya. While Abha is still making efforts to find her daughter, Avi seems to have given up. Their marriage has also turned bitter.

5 months pass and Avi is at the crime branch’s office. The other girl, Gayatri is also missing. Avi breaks down as he ruminates about the possibility of her daughter being dead. Abhishek Bachchan delivers a hair-raising performance in this scene. Jaiprakash tries to console him.

9 months pass and Siya is still missing. At his office, Avi checks his letters. One of the letters has Siya’s ‘Missing’ poster that Abha circulated. Nothing additional is mentioned in it and there is also no return address. Avi’s secretary tells him that the letter was in the mail.

In the next scene, we see Saiyami Kher’s character, Shirley. She gets a message about the number plate of a black Honda and gets into the car when she sees it. She immediately lays some ground rules about her work. It seems that she is a call girl. She looks at the driver of the car who is Avinash. He is confused. She realises that she is in the wrong car and gets off. Hmm..strange!

Next, we see an inmate at a jail trying to stab another inmate. The inmate being stabbed is none other than Kabir Sawant, the police officer. But why is he in jail? Kabir and his attacker have a fist fight and the jailor intervenes. Kabir passes out because of the stab wound.

Avinash gets a courier at home. After 9 whole months, we finally hear something from the kidnappers of Siya. The courier has a poster with “How far will you go to save your daughter?” written on it. There is also a video briefly showing Siya's 9 months in captivity. During the initial months, Siya cries endlessly but it gradually subdues. We also see Gayatri with Siya. She takes care of Siya like an older sister and even gives her insulin shots. They seem to be trapped in a Bigg Boss type room with one of its walls having a one-way glass. The kidnapper keeps an eye on them through this wall. In the last clip of the video, Siya holds up a drawing on the wall with the one-way glass while Gayatri holds up a newspaper. Avi and Abha notice that the newspaper is dated yesterday. But where was this kidnapper all this while? Like every other kidnapper in movies, this kidnapper also talks through a robot voice-changer. However, what sets this kidnapping apart is that the kidnapper doesn’t want money in return. He wants Avi to kill a certain Pritpal Singh Bharaj. No, this isn’t it. The kidnapper also wants the cause of Pritpal’s death to be his anger. Avi has to evoke the emotion of anger in Pritpal and then kill him, record him while dying and send the video to the kidnapper. Looks like the kidnapper is also giving tasks like Bigg Boss. He also says that he has only a limited amount of insulin left to give to Siya so Avi better hurry up. At the end of the video, the kidnapper shows himself. He is wearing a mask and the same red chequered hoodie. He also tells them that there is a surprise for Avi and Abha in their car. Avi checks his car and there is Siya’s drawing inside. Wait, did Shirley keep that drawing when she “accidentally” sat in Avi’s car?

The first episode of Breathe: Into the Shadows isn’t as gripping as I expected it to be. The initial scenes are slow and stretched as we just see Avi and Abha waiting and crying. However, the episode gets interesting in the end with the kidnapper’s message.

Episode Rating: 2.5/5
