Bhaag Beanie Bhaag Season 1 Episode 1 Recap
An unhappy corporate employee, Beanie is actually interested in doing comedy.
The first episode of Bhaag Beanie Bhaag begins with Beanie standing on the stage to begin her stand-up set. Right then, the episode breaks into a flashback narrated by Beanie herself. She is an ordinary girl who belongs to a middle-class family. Since her childhood, she had a flair for entertaining people. But because she was not good at singing or dancing, everyone around her used to dismiss her. Then she came across Shekhar Suman’s show on television and was introduced to the world of comedy. Thereon, she spent time reading books based on comedy. As she grew up, she did MBA to suit the norm in the professional world. Then she took up a 9 to 5 corporate job. She has a boyfriend, Arun, whom she has been dating for three years.
One fine day, Arun proposes marriage to her. Beanie did not expect this to happen so soon. She is taken aback for a moment. However, her response is obvious.
The chants of her family expecting her to have kids start to haunt her. She speaks to Arun regarding this. He assures her that they will not plan kids immediately but it is bound to happen in a year or so. Beanie is not in the mood to have kids at all it seems. But she isn’t vocal about her concern.
In the evening, Beanie goes to a comedy club with her best friend, Kapi. Although Beanie has a day job, she goes for open mics. All the spots have been occupied and there’s no vacant spot for Beanie. She requests the producer to arrange for one but no luck. Kapi suggests that Beanie go to this NRI looking boy and manipulate him to give her his spot. Beanie goes to this boy, Ravi, and successfully manages to take over his spot. Then Beanie goes up the stage and performs a decent set.
While leaving the club, a guy who manages comics offers Beanie a great opportunity to launch her career as a real comic which, in her own words, she is not. He offers her a 10-minute spot in the New Faces showcase for new comedians. However, Beanie declines the offer because her roka is scheduled on the same day as the event.
When she meets Arun next, Beanie tells him about this showcase. Though she has declined the offer, she still wants to make it happen for herself. She wants to be a part of this showcase because it genuinely is a big deal. Beanie also opens up to Arun that she wishes to take up comedy professionally. However, Arun is a major prick. He doesn’t understand her partner and is not at all supportive of her. He rather gaslights her to make the “right decision”. Honestly, their relationship is very caricaturish in the show.
Beanie goes to the comedy club again. This time she has come just for a quick change of mood. She bumps into Ravi, the NRI comic. They both don’t have a spot so they decide to go and check out other comedy clubs. After a good run on the stage, they have chai from a cycle vendor.
Next, we see Beanie in an extremely bizarre attire in her roka. The function is full of middle-aged judgemental aunties. Beanie’s father gives Arun an expensive watch as a gift to match the standards of Arun’s high-class business family. Arun presents Beanie with a big lavish house. Both families go to see the house. Beanie is not able to cope with the expectations of the different family members. Everything seems very daunting to her. Beanie apologises to Arun and runs away to the showcase event with Kapi. On her way in the cab, she sends a resignation note to her boss. She was never interested in the job she was doing. But she continued to do it for the sake of her family.
And now we are back at the point where the episode began. Beanie is on the stage of this showcase event after leaving her roka midway to leverage the once in a lifetime opportunity that has come her way.
