Asur Season 1 Episode 8 Recap: End Is The Beginning

The last episode of Asur: Welcome to Your Dark Side begins 10 years ago in Varanasi. DJ and Nikhil discuss Shubh’s case. DJ believes that Shubh poisoned his father and since all evidence went down in the lake, DJ fabricates proof against Shubh. Nikhil doesn’t think this to be right. DJ gets Shubh’s fake birth certificate made and also brings in a fake witness of the crime. DJ thinks that Shubh is a psychopath killer and deserves to be in jail. However, Nikhil doesn’t support this and rather says that the minor should be sent to counselling and not jail. DJ has made up his mind and won’t listen to anyone. Nikhil decides to resign from the CBI in turn.

In the present day, the search for Nikhil is still on. DJ is certain that the killer will come to Central Jail to kill DJ now that his name has popped up in the database.

The CBI learns that two important political figures, Neeraj Jadhav and Radhika Venkatesh are missing. Both of them were shortlisted by the CBI as the killer’s next targets. A religious speaker, Umar Sayyed is also missing.

The kidnapper grows impatient because Nikhil yet doesn’t have a final plan to kill DJ. Nikhil warns him that this could be a trap set by DJ.

DJ again listens to Kesar’s podcasts carefully. What Kesar says reminds him of what Shubh said on the morning after his father’s death when he completed DJ’s father’s veneration. He wonders if Kesar is Shubh and why he is helping DJ in the case. DJ immediately sends a team to Kesar’s home.

Next, we see the three missing people in a chamber. The kidnapper says that they will reveal the basic nature of human beings in this chamber. The chamber only has oxygen for 12 hours – the less the number of people at the end, the more oxygen for an individual to survive and buy time till the CBI finds them. So, the kidnapper puts them in a situation wherein they will have to kill to survive.

Kesar hasn’t been home in the last 24 hours. A background check on him reveals that his birth certificate is fake and he doesn’t have any family records. He doesn’t have any records until 2008 when he won a debating competition which was five months after the arson at the Varanasi jail. This emboldens DJ’s suspicion of Kesar.

Lolark notices a burn scar on Rasul’s arm and suspiciously asks him about it. Rasul says that he got the scar during his childhood. I always found something fishy with Rasul and I won’t be surprised if he turns out to be an accomplice in the crime.

Nikhil makes his nose bleed by hurting himself in the washroom. He projects it to be an existing nose bleed problem and asks the kidnapper for medicines and a glass of water.

The kidnapper (Shubh?) enters the Central Jail as a prisoner to execute the plan of DJ’s murder.

Radhika, Neeraj and Umar panic and fight in the chamber. Only 8 hours of oxygen is left.

DJ remembers that Kesar wears a Fitbit. With Naina’s help, he is able to trace the location of Kesar’s Fitbit. Following the location, Lolark and Rasul find Kesar who is very unaffected about his arrest and happily goes with them. Lolark gets a lead from Gurgaon and prepares to go there. Rasul insists on tagging along with him.

Meanwhile, Nikhil takes the glass and medicine to the washroom. Through his knowledge of forensic science, he takes the fingerprint of the kidnapper from the glass by grinding and blowing the medicine on a piece of plastic. I would like to appreciate the genius script of Asur here. His room’s door has a fingerprint lock. He remembers the numbers of the lock from the sounds the buttons make when they are pressed. Through the kidnapper’s fingerprint, he successfully unlocks the door.

The three hostages start to become breathless. Umar thinks of killing Radhika but Neeraj is against it. Suddenly, the oxygen starts decreasing.

Free at last, Nikhil has no idea about his whereabouts. He hitch-hikes to the main road.

Lolark and Rasul are on their way to check the Gurgaon lead. Lolark asks questions about Rasul’s history like his college’s name and his friends. Lolark is finally satisfied about Rasul being clean when he cross-checks with one of Rasul’s friends about his truth.

In a shop on the road, Nikhil sees the news of the three people held hostage by the kidnapper. He requests to make a phone call.

At Central Jail, the kidnapper sets off a mini-explosion to create a state of emergency and panic. Nikhil calls the jail to warn DJ about his life being in danger but the officials are too busy handling the situation at hand.

DJ spots smoke outside his door. The kidnapper enters his room but DJ overpowers him and ties him on a chair with ropes. Is he Shubh or not?

Shashank interrogates Kesar and calls him Shubh. So, is Kesar the real Shubh?

We learn that the kidnapper is actually one of the many members of Shubh’s cult.

The footage of the three hostages fighting for oxygen is telecasted live.

DJ decides to undertake illegal narcosis on Shubh (Kesar) and starts questioning him on the whereabouts of the hostages.

Rasul and Lolark reach the kidnapper’s abode where Nikhil was kept. They see the kidnapper’s machinery and various CCTV footage. A diary slips from Rasul’s bag and Lolark picks it up. The drawings in the diary are similar to the drawings which Lolark saw in Shubh’s diary. At this point, Rasul reveals his true colours and hits Lolark.

In the chamber, oxygen is running out. Umar attempts to choke Radhika. Nikhil sees this being broadcasted in the news. He notices that the hostages are in a chemical factory. He immediately calls Nusrat and intimates her about it. DJ asks Shubh (Kesar) about the chemical factory in which the hostages are kept. Shubh says that he will only open his mouth when DJ repents for his sins and faces them.

Rasul ties Lolark to a chair and shows him the live footage of DJ interrogating Shubh.

DJ confesses that he fabricated evidence against Shubh to send him to jail. Shubh gives him three pills. As DJ will take one pill, Shubh will give him one piece of information. Despite Nusrat’s objections, DJ takes the first pill. Consequently, Shubh tells him the name of the chemical factory. DJ calls Nikhil and forwards this information to him.

At the kidnapper’s abode, Lolark gets a call from his wife and Rasul lets him take it while keeping him at gunpoint. Lolark breaks down while talking to his wife and bids goodbye to her.

The pill starts showing its effects in DJ’s body. Nusrat keeps an ambulance ready. DJ takes the second pill and Shubh tells him the wing and the chamber of the chemical factory. With difficulty in breathing and blurry vision, DJ calls Nikhil and tells him the location.

Nikhil reaches the chemical factory and sees that Umar is trying to kill Radhika. He tries to open the door of the chamber but can’t figure out how. A backup team reaches the factory along with Naina. Nikhil and Naina hug and reunite. Then, Naina tries to decode the lock of the chamber. Rasul calls Nikhil and talks to him through a voice changer. Rasul talks about the demons inside human beings. Nikhil asks him about the way to unlock the chamber. Rasul makes him choose between Nikhil’s daughter and the three hostages. Stuck in a dilemma, he chooses the three hostages and the chamber is unlocked. Nikhil is left crying as he realises what he just did.

DJ’s condition deteriorates but he still takes the third pill. He is immediately taken to the hospital.

Riya’s babysitter is also a part of Shubh’s cult and she poisons Riya.

Lolark mocks Rasul for losing since Nikhil chose the three hostages instead of Riya. Lolark also calls him by the name of Shubh. Enraged, Rasul shoots Lolark dead. Wait, is Rasul the real Shubh?

In a shocking scene back at the chamber, Radhika grabs an officer’s gun and shoots Umar in the head! This is what Shubh was talking about when he said all humans have a dark side.

Naina and Nikhil reach home and find Riya dead. Nikhil hugs his lifeless daughter and cries.

All the drama and action subsides. We’re shown Lolark’s funeral which is also attended by Rasul. This means that Rasul’s real identity is still hidden from the CBI. Kesar is in the CBI’s custody. For the CBI, Kesar is Shubh. Naina and Nikhil part ways and DJ is suspended from work.

One week later, DJ visits Nikhil and expresses grief over his daughter’s death. This triggers an angry outburst from Nikhil. He abuses DJ and holds him and his ego responsible for everything that has happened. Rasul comes in to control Nikhil and takes him away. Turning back, Rasul gives DJ a look. This look is enough to tell the audience that Rasul is Shubh indeed.

The last episode of Asur: Welcome to Your Dark Side justifies every point of the build-up of the story. This episode makes shocking revelations and really keeps the viewers at the edge of their seats till the end. With an official second season of Asur in the pipeline, it will be interesting to see where the ‘Shubh vs DJ + Nikhil’ battle goes from here.
