Asur Season 1 Episode 7 Recap: Let There Be Darkness

The seventh episode of Asur: Welcome to Your Dark Side opens 10 years ago in Varanasi. Shubh is in jail and Nikhil has come to see him. Shubh narrates a story to Nikhil about the Devtas harassing and killing Asuras in the Adi Kala. Nikhil apologises to him and says, “The system has let you down”. However, Shubh says that it is DJ’s fault and Nikhil doesn’t need to apologise. Nikhil suggests that Shubh admit his crime so that he can be transferred to the juvenile center. But, keeping his calm as always, Shubh says that he won’t disrespect himself by apologising. While Nikhil leaves, Shubh says “Sheeghra hi aap se mulakat hogi”. This gives us another hint that the kidnapper is none other than Shubh.

CBI tries to recover from its failure to prevent Aditya Jalan’s murder.

During Aditya’s autopsy, DJ and Nusrat find that Nikhil made use of Aditya’s ulcer problem to poison him. Two more elements are found in Aditya’s bloodstream but they are extra and non-toxic. DJ believes Nikhil is trying to give them a message through these elements.

Nikhil is in a miserable condition. The kidnapper gives him cigarettes as a reward for two successful killings. Nikhil asks him how he came back so early from Mumbai to which the kidnapper gives a mysterious reply saying that he is omnipresent. “Sheeghra hi mulakaat hogi”, says the kidnapper and leaves. This strikes Nikhil and he remembers Shubh.

DJ reads books on Hindu mythology and listens to Kesar’s podcast about it. Lolark returns from Varanasi with Shubh’s astral chart and diary. DJ admires Kesar for combining spirituality and practicality and reciting it in a simple manner. DJ calls Kesar for some help.

DJ wonders how they can recognise the killer’s next target from a database of 600 people born in the Delphinus constellation. DJ recognises that the killer’s victims are all achievers and noble people and it is almost like the killer is punishing them for it. Kesar feels that the killer is targeting those people who fit into the ‘Ashta Siddhi’ which means eight great perfections. The killer thinks of himself as a mythological devil and is killing good people to message Vishnu to reincarnate as Kalki and have a face-off with him. Shubh’s astral chart also matches that of the devil Kali.

In an unreal scene in Nikhil’s imagination, Nikhil stands in front of Nusrat and says sorry to her for leaving 10 years ago without any information. He also sees Naina next who says that Nikhil is always absent and lost in himself. Nusrat asks Nikhil if he still loves her and he says that he does. But, the next minute, he hugs Naina. Coming back to reality, Nikhil asks the kidnapper to make one phone call to Naina.

At the makeshift workplace in Central Jail, the SIC server takes a lot of time to load which slows down the investigation. DJ grows impatient and suggests shutting down the official SIC server for some time.

At the CBI’s linguistic division, Lolark makes the HOD listen to Kesar’s podcast and live speech recording. The podcast and the live speech don’t match linguistically because the dialect, punctuation and use of words are different. This means that the person behind the podcast is someone else.

DJ and Shashank reach the Home Secretary’s Office in New Delhi to request shutting down the SIC server for some time. The CBI has identified the next two victims of the killer who are leftists. The secretary instructs to increase the security of the targets but doesn’t permit shutting the server. Fed up with the bureaucracy, DJ leaves.

The kidnapper lets Nikhil call Naina. He tells Naina that he is doing fine. Then, he reminisces about the time when he and Naina were sitting on a Ghat and Naina was endlessly crying complaining that Nikhil is always present at two places at the same time. Naina doesn’t understand what he is trying to say because none of this ever happened. Before Nikhil can say more, the kidnapper cuts the call.

Naina comes to the makeshift CBI workplace with a recording of Nikhil’s call. The team listens to it and DJ says that Nikhil is trying to give a message. “Ghat” indicates that Nikhil is trying to direct them towards Shubh because he lived in Varanasi. DJ figures out that Nikhil is also trying to say that there are two people involved in this crime, i.e., the kidnapper has an accomplice.

DJ goes on to decode the mystery behind the presence of two extra non-toxic elements in Aditya’s bloodstream. The elements are Nickel and Iridium. DJ successfully cracks it – adding the respective atomic number and atomic mass of the elements gives two rough coordinates of a location. On checking, the team finds that the location is in Delhi itself. DJ sends a team to search in and around the location of the coordinates and another team to find out Shubh’s whereabouts.

Lolark tells DJ about his suspicion about Kesar and hands him the linguistic report. DJ tells him to bring Kesar so that he can talk to him. Meanwhile, DJ asks Naina to trace the origin of the podcast voice.

Next, we’re shown people listening to Kesar’s podcast in which he talks about accepting one’s darkness. The listeners have a tattoo of the infinity symbol just like the one at the kidnapper’s desk.

Naina gets a notification about the killer searching for targets because she installed a bot in the SIC system which would notify the CBI whenever there is an activity in it.

The police search for Nikhil and two police officers end up at the right location. However, they are shot.

DJ makes an absurd request to Naina. He wants her to add his name to the SIC database so that he can lure the killer to himself. Naina thinks this is suicidal and doesn’t agree but DJ insists and breaks down in front of her saying that he doesn’t want anyone to die like Sandhya. Naina reluctantly adds his name to the database.

At the killer’s abode, he searches the database and guess whose name pops up? It is none other than Dhananjay Rajpoot. DJ’s profile is sent to Nikhil and the episode ends here.

In the penultimate episode of Asur: Welcome to Your Dark Side, the CBI reaches very close to cracking the case. I suspect that Kesar is Shubh’s accomplice in the serial killings. I hope that the next and last episode answers all the questions.
