A Suitable Boy: Why Kabir Durrani is our favourite out of Lata's suitors

Lata has three men to choose from - charming cricketer and college mate Kabir Durrani (Danesh Razvi), Meenakshi’s younger brother; UK-educated poet Amit Chatterji (Mikhail Sen), and industrious shoemaker Haresh Khanna (Namit Das), a self-made careerist who swears by hard work and sincerity.  All three men try their ways to catch Lata’s attention. But who is Lata’s best suitor?

Let’s take a look at where Kabir stands. In the earlier episodes, Lata falls in love with Kabir. Despite being well aware of the pervading religious tensions,  she goes as far as wanting to run away from home. Kabir, though willing to fight against all odds, disappoints when he decides against running away from Brahmpur. This could have been the beginning of the end of the love Kabir and Lata shared.

But here’s why we love Kabir- he is genuine and persistent. Upon Lata’s return from Calcutta, he tries to win her back while co-acting in a theatrical play. The one thing that stands out about this relationship though is that it started effortlessly and wasn’t thrust upon her by her relatives. In fact, it was love at first sight. Lata wanted to know all about Kabir when she first saw him playing cricket. Besides, Kabir and Lata have shared interests- they’re both in college, they love theatre and literature. Not to mention, Kabir is good looking. Agreed that they may have to endure the test of social disapproval, but wouldn't it make for a beautiful story?

We’re no fans of Amit. Though Lata seems to fancy Amit and his British ways, he sort of lives in his own world and seems mostly uninterested. He has to be reminded of Lata by his sister as she tells him that he wouldn't stand a chance if he didn't reach out to Lata. He then sends his book of poems with a personalized note for Lata all the way from Calcutta. Should this be enough to please Lata? We don’t think so.

Haresh, the last of the lot to be introduced to Lata tries way too hard. In a strange attempt to impress Lata and her mother, he took them to his workplace- a tannery. Terrible idea! While it's admirable that Haresh loves his work, and we mean no disrespect, taking your prospective partner to a place that stinks isn't a great first date idea.

Haresh may check off some boxes- honest, hard-working, grounded. But that doesn't suffice as Lata remains unattracted to him. When Lata returns to Brahmpur, Haresh continues to exchange letters with her and updates her about his career prospects. While they do exchange a LOT of letters, at best, they should have remained pen friends.

Signing off, team Kabir Durrani.
