A Suitable Boy Season 1 Episode 3

Lata’s mother, feeling almost enraged at the prospect of her daughter getting married to Amit leaves Calcutta. “One Chatterji in the family is enough”, she feels.  She goes off to Lucknow with the Sehgals to find a more suitable match for Lata. Meanwhile, Amit and Lata hang out and explore Calcutta.

At Saeeda Begum’s request, Maan travels with Rasheed to his village, Rudhia to learn Urdu. Rasheed introduces Maan to his father as the son of Mahesh Kapoor, the man who he thinks is trying to “steal” their lands.

Maan finds out that Rasheed is married and asks if he loves his wife. “It is my duty to love,” he says. He tells Maan the tragic story behind his marriage - the fact that his wife was the widow of his late brother.

Besides, Maan is disturbed to learn about the extreme poverty and discrimination against the farmers who tirelessly work for landlords in Rudhia. He intervenes when a Munshi hits a woman and evicts for allegedly trying to grab the land of a landowner. Maan stops him, and gains the trust of Waris, the Nawabs man in Rudhia. It is evident that the people of Rudhia begin to love Maan as they gather around him and hear him talk.

During his time there, he takes Rasheed’s help to write a letter to Saeeda Begum which is delivered by his friend Firoz. Firoz and Tasneem have a moment when he catches her dancing, and is instantly in awe of her. Saeeda Begum awkwardly asks Firoz to leave instantly. But, Firoz revisits Tasneem.

Lata’s mother, Rupa, brings Kalpana to the Sehgal’s home, who tries to help her find appropriate matches for Lata. But mostly in vain. After going through an exhaustive list of resumes, Kalpana introduces her to a schoolmate, Haresh, as a “very nice boy”. In their first introductory meeting, Haresh shares that after coming back from studying in the UK, he is now working for a shoe company. Rupa is rather impressed after looking at his credentials.

A judgment on the Zamindari Abolition Act is delivered- the abolition of the Act is declared unconstitutional leaving the Raja of Brahampur furious. This came as a huge victory for Mahesh Kapoor.

Once Lata comes to Lucknow to stay at the Sehgal’s house after being summoned by her mother, she is angry at her mother for asking her to come all the way on false pretense. Rupa convinces her that she won’t regret it. Haresh invites Lata and her mother to his home for a luncheon and then takes them to his place of work- a tannery where Rupa nearly faints. Both the mother and daughter are disgusted by their visit to the tannery, yet Haresh says that he is proud of his work.

Lata’s trip already isn't going too well, but things get worse- in a horrific incident, Lata is sexually assaulted by Mr. Sehgal making the next day’s family breakfast rather awkward. Both Rupa and Lata decide to leave Lucknow for Brahmpur. As they are leaving, Haresh comes to see off Lata and her mother at the train station.

Meanwhile, Saeeda misses Maan and wonders why she ever asked him to leave. She writes back to her Daag Saheb and expresses her feelings. Rasheed asks Maan to stay back and help Kaccheru, a poor land worker, but Maan is suddenly uninterested. Excited that Saeeda has called for him, he leaves Rudhia to see her.

Lata’s sister (Savita) and her family go to the overly-crowded Pul Mela in Brahmpur. When they meet Baba ji, he says “Death. Death will make all the difference”, leaving everyone confused and shocked. We’re yet to find out what baba ji’s remark signified. On their return, a stampede strikes, and Savita’s son Bhasker is lost in the crowd.

This episode ends on a suspenseful note. You can’t not watch the next episode because who’s to know what happens with Bhasker.
