A Suitable Boy Season 1 Episode 2

Lata Mehra and Maan Kapoor both know that their parents would disapprove of their love affairs but that doesn't stop them from risking everything for love. Lata’s romantic exploration with Kabir Durrani continues as the two lurk around, boating through a scenic river to Barsaat Mahal. Meanwhile, Maan (or “Daagh Saheb” as Saeeda Begum calls him) continues to secretly visit her at her place.
News of the two love stories spreads quickly and becomes the gossip of the town. Lata’s mother, Rupa Mehra is taken aback when she finds out about her relationship while sitting with her friends over tea. Rupa’s biggest concern is whether the boy Lata is seeing belongs to the same community. She insists on finding out what his last name is. Things get worse for Lata the moment she discloses that she is in love with a Muslim boy. Rupa gets furious and decides to take Lata away to her son’s place in Calcutta immediately.
Maan’s politician father (Revenue Minister) Mahesh Kapoor suspects Maan’s involvement with Saeeda when he hears him humming a ghazal she performs. His suspicion is confirmed by the Home Minister as a jibe.
Both face heat from their parents and are forbidden from seeing their lovers. Lata packs some of her things and asks Kabir if he would run away with her, but he refuses. Disappointed in Kabir, Lata takes off for Calcutta with her mother. Meanwhile, Maan faces the heat at home as his father says that he has brought much embarrassment to him and his family. Maan decides to leave his home in Brahmpur and goes off to study Urdu with Rasheed Bhai at Saeeda’s insistense. Rasheed is an Urdu teacher and son of a Zamindar in Rudhai who is interested in Saeeda’s sister Tasneem.
All of this is happening amid the trial of the colonial Zamindari Act led by Maan’s father. Mahesh faces criticism for trying to bring positive reform in the country and is met with resistance by his own party members as well as the greedy Maharaja of Marh who opposes his endeavours strongly.
New characters in the series are introduced - As Lata leaves for Calcutta, a glimpse of Haresh Khanna is shown, who is caught gazing longingly at Lata while carrying boxes of shoes at the train station. Upon her arrival in Calcutta, Meenakshi, Lata’s modern progressive sister-in-law introduces her to her brother, Amit, as a prospective match. Amit is shown as an accomplished writer who takes great interest in Lata. However, Lata continues to yearn for Kabir till she gets a letter from him.
We also meet Varun, Lata’s youngest brother. He is constantly bullied by his older brother Amit, with whom he lives. He drinks too much, sings too loudly and is too ‘Indian’ for Amit’s liking.
The episode ends with a dolled-up Lata dancing the tango with Amit and having fun for the first time since her heartbreak with Kabir.
